Fraser and Kovacs Dominate: Place First and Second at BIG EAST Championship
CINCINNATI – Melissa Fraser and Alanna Kovacs delivered a one-two punch for the women’s track and field team today at the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Championship. The duo placed first and second, respectively, to give the Blue Demons 18 team points. Fraser, who sat out during last season’s league championship, reclaimed the javelin title after winning her first conference crown during the 2008 season. She becomes the sixth BIG EAST Champion in DePaul history, and is the second student-athlete to claim multiple titles. With a distance of 46.80m, the lead belonged to Fraser through the first four rounds, and was only to be challenged by Kovacs. On her fifth pass down the runway, Kovacs took over the top position, measuring a throw of 46.96m. Unable to reclaim the top spot during her fifth attempt, Fraser was left with one final throw to take the lead back, and effectively the conference title. The 2008 BIG EAST javelin champion and NCAA Championship qualifier proved her composer and delivered a throw of 47.83m to take the win. Kovacs, a sophomore, improved her career-best finish at the BIG EAST Championship to second place, and earned all-conference honors for the first time in her ever-improving and impressive collegiate career. Action continues the rest of the afternoon and all day on Sunday. Full results and recaps will be posted throughout the day.
