Track and Field Heads to Connecticut for BIG EAST Outdoor Championships
DePaul opens Saturday’s competition at 11 a.m. (CST) when Curtis Hoag enters the men’s shot put. The Blue Demon freshman exceeded the BIG EAST qualifying mark of 14.63m in four meets this season and notched a personal-best 15.23m throw at last week’s Illinois State Invitational.
Track events get underway at 12:30 p.m. when Claire Duck races in the women’s 1,500m run preliminaries. Her season-best time of 4:32.34 marks one of three performances she recorded this season better than the qualifying standard of 4:38.44.
Tammy Burris and Ebonie Cobb open women’s field events at 1 p.m. when they enter the shot put. This season saw Burris set a new DePaul record of 13.79m while breaking the qualifying standard of 12.50m in five meets. At the same time on the track, Kaaydah Nangle races in the women’s 100m hurdles preliminaries.
Field events continue at 1:30 p.m. with Joe Strawder in the men’s long jump and Hoag in the men’s discus throw. Last week’s Illinois State Invitational saw Strawder clear an NCAA regional qualifying distance of 7.44m, while Hoag carries a season-best throw of 45.78m.
The Blue Demons resume track events at 1:45 p.m. when Gabe Harris takes on the men’s 400m dash preliminaries. The Blue Demon sophomore holds a season-best time of 48.01 and has eclipsed the qualifying standard of 49.04 in three outdoor meets.
Stephanie Williams enters preliminaries for the 100m dash at 2 p.m. and returns with LaShunta Sanders for the 200m dash trials at 3:40 p.m. Williams set a DePaul record in the 200m dash this season with a time of 24.52.
Jamie Holifield joins Burris at 3:30 p.m. in the women’s discus throw. Holifield surpassed the qualifying standard of 40.00m in three meets this season, while Burris carries a season-best mark of 42.24m.
Saturday’s action concludes at 5:25 p.m. when Jakub Kolacz enters the men’s 10,000m run. The Blue Demon freshman broke the USA Junior Track and Field Championship qualifying standard of 32:45.00 twice this season.
First-day preliminaries also place DePaul in the men’s 200m dash and women’s 800m run.
Competition continues on Sunday with the women’s and men’s 4x100m relays, women’s and men’s 4x400m relays, women’s and men’s hammer throw, women’s and men’s triple jump, men’s 5,000m run and men’s javelin. The final day also holds championship heats for the women’s and men’s 100m dash, women’s and men’s 200m dash, men’s 400m dash, women’s 800m run, women’s 1,500m run and women’s 110m hurdles.
The 2006 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships saw DePaul’s women finish 16th in the team standings with nine points, while the Blue Demon men scored no points.
