Track and Field Wraps Up Day One of BIG EAST Championships

STORRS, Connecticut- The women’s track and field squad sits at 16th in the team standings with three points while the men’s team scored no points after the first full day of competition at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships on Saturday.  Senior Lindsey Deason scored all three points for the Blue Demons by taking sixth place in the women’s heptathlon at the University of Connecticut’s George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.

 

Deason notched a total score of 4705 in the multi-event to shatter her previous school record of 4321.  The senior won the heptathlon shot put with a throw of 12.79m and took first in the heptathlon javelin throw with a mark of 37.82m.  Buky Bamigboye of Georgetown won the multi-event with a score of 5410.

 

Freshman Stephanie Williams opened the track events in the 100m dash preliminaries where she notched a time of 12.35 to take 17th overall.  The mark was her second best time of the season.  Senior Jamal Cornelious followed in the men’s 100m dash preliminaries where he finished 13th overall, delivering his second best time of the season at 10.91.

 

In throwing events, junior Jamie Holifield placed 10th in the women’s discus, registering a throw of 43.25m.  Cycerli Ash of Rutgers won the event with a distance of 51.09m.  Junior Erika Lockhart finished 13th in the shot put, notching a mark of 12.61m.  Syracuse’s Johvonne Hernandez took first with a throw of 15.44m.

 

In the men’s 3,000m steeplechase, junior Anthony Becknek finished ninth with a time of 9:18.12.  Andrew Keino of Villanova took the event title with a time of 9:00.40.

 

BIG EAST Championship competition resumes Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. (CST) with sophomore Tammy Burris joining Holifield and senior Jeana LeRoy in the women’s hammer throw.  The weekend closes at 1:35 p.m. as the men’s 4x400m relay team of junior Donnie Smith, freshman Patrick Smith, freshman Gabe Harris, and sophomore Richard Fugiel pass the baton.

 

Syracuse currently leads in the women’s standings with 53 points while Louisville leads the men’s teams with 61 points.

 

CSTV will televise the Championships via tape delay on May 15 at 8:00 p.m. (CST).
