Tim Nedow Wins Shot Put at Billy Hayes Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite stormy conditions in the Bloomington area, the weather held off long enough for action at the Billy Hayes Invitational to finish as scheduled on Friday evening.  A quartet of throwers from the DePaul men’s and women’s track and field teams competed, including Melissa Fraser, Alanna Kovacs, Matt Babicz and Tim Nedow.  Nedow highlighted the evening with a win in the shot put.

Nedow, who placed fourth at last weekend’s BIG EAST Conference Championships, won the Billy Hayes shot put title with a launch of 17/50m.  His personal-best stands at 17.67m, a mark that puts him well within the top-48 that earns a bid to the NCAA Championship Preliminary Rounds held in a few weeks.  Babicz finished in the top-five, boasting a throw of 15.80m.

In the women’s shot put, Kovacs placed 12th with a distance of 13.10m.  The sophomore’s season-best distance stands at 13.34m.

In the hammer competition, Fraser was the top finisher for the Blue Demons.  She logged a throw of 50.49m to place 10th, while Kovacs unleashed a personal-best throw of 45.72m to finish in 15th

Kovacs continued on in the discus throw, placing third behind a distance of 42.65m.  On the men’s side, Babicz paced the Blue Demons with a throw of 46.17m, while Nedow finished the evening with a distance of 44.07m.

The Blue Demons return to action this Tuesday, May 11, for the DePaul Relays.  Senior day will be celebrated at 5 p.m. (CST) at Lane Stadium, with field events starting immediately after.  Running events get underway at 5:15 p.m., beginning with the DIBS’ Kids Relay.
