Home Field Advantage: Blue Demons Host the DePaul Relays on Tuesday
CHICAGO - The DePaul men's and women's track and field teams welcome talent from the greater-Chicago area to Lane Stadium on Tuesday, May 11 for the running of the DePaul Relays. The event marks just the second regular-season meet the Blue Demons have hosted in more than 50 years.
In addition to DePaul, competition features students-athletes from Olivet Nazarene, University of Chicago, Loyola-Chicago, University of Illinois-Chicago and Oakton Community College. Following the Senior Day Celebration at 5 p.m. (CST), field events get underway with the shot put in the south end zone, and the hammer throw located just south of the track. Action on the track begins at 5:15 p.m. with the DIBS' Kids Relay. Children, ages 6-10, are invited to race in a 4x100m sprint around the track. All participants receive a FREE t-shirt. Racers, and their guardians, are asked to arrive at Lane Stadium at 4:45 p.m. for instruction and warm-ups. The first collegiate race starting pistol sounds at 5:50 p.m. with the 4x800m relay. Other relays to follow include the 4x200m, 4x400m, 4x800m, and the sprint medley relays. The 3,000m and the 1,500m will be run as individual open events. The Blue Demons have seen great success when running on their home turf, as student-athletes from DePaul won over half of the events during the inaugural relays in 2008. Away from home, DePaul has experienced one of its most successful seasons in program history. Two conference champions were crowned at the BIG EAST Conference Championships two weeks ago in Cincinnati. Melissa Fraser won her second title in the javelin, while Brad Millar earned his third league win in the hammer throw. Overall, the men placed 10th with 37 points. The women's squad took 11th place with 36 points. Both point totals were the most either team has scored in BIG EAST Championship play. Lane Stadium is located just west of Lane Technical High School at 2501 W. Addison Street. Event parking is located just south of the high school, and can be accessed from Western Ave. Transportation to and from Lane Stadium will be provided free of charge for students and run several times throughout the meet. The first bus is scheduled to leave from the Sullivan Athletic Center (2323 N. Sheffield Ave.) at 4:30 p.m., and run again at 5:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 7 p.m. The final bus leaves Lane Stadium for DePaul at the conclusion of the meet-sometime around 8:00 p.m. Live meet updates can be followed on the DePaul Twitter page. Full results and recaps will be available at www.DePaulBlueDemons.com following the conclusion of the meet.
