Track and Field Concludes Louisville Cardinal Twilight
LOUISVILLE, Ky. Stephanie Williams improved her own DePaul record in the women’s 200m dash as the women’s and men’s track and field teams competed at the Louisville Cardinal Twilight on Saturday. Brad Millar and Melissa Fraser posted NCAA Regional Championship qualifying marks during the last-chance meet at Cardinal Park.
Williams finished second in the 200m race with a time of 24.00. She broke her previous school record of 24.01 but missed the NCAA Regional standard by 0.04 seconds. Williams also competed in the women’s 100m dash, where she finished third with a time of 11.88.
The men’s hammer throw saw Millar place third with a 58.89m throw. The two-time BIG EAST Conference champion has satisfied the NCAA Regional standard of 55.60m in every meet this season.
Fraser opened the day for the Blue Demons when she took second place in the women’s javelin throw with a mark of 47.10m. The freshman BIG EAST champion exceeded the NCAA Regional distance of 43.45m for the ninth time this season.
Saturday’s throwing events also placed Tammy Burris in the women’s discus and women’s hammer throw. Burris placed fourth in the discus with a mark of 43.40m and sixth in the hammer throw with a 51.26m toss.
Joe Strawder represented DePaul in Saturday’s jumping events. The Blue Demon sophomore took third place in the men’s triple jump with a mark of 13.62m after he placed fourth in the long jump with a 6.81m leap. Strawder already holds a ticket to the NCAA Regional with his season-opening long jump of 7.41m.
Claire Duck and Allyson Petersen competed for the Blue Demons in the middle-distance events. Duck ran a solo race in the women’s 1,500m run, where she notched a personal-best time of 4:27.85; narrowly missing the NCAA Regional standard of 4:27.80. Petersen finished third in the women’s 800m run with a time of 2:13.11 her second best race of the season.
The Blue Demons return to competition, May 30-31, at the NCAA Mid East Regional Championships. DePaul holds a program-best five bids for the meet in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Mary Cate Quiett carries a qualification in the women’s 800m run, while Millar punched tickets for the men’s javelin and hammer throw. Fraser looks to compete in the women’s javelin throw and Strawder will represent DePaul in the men’s long jump.
