Recapping the Conference USA Championships
The DePaul men’s track and field team finished 11th at the annual C-USA meet in Louisville, Ky. Jarrod Jahnke kept DePaul’s reign in the hammer throw in tact by defending his 2003 title with a winning distance of 59.59 meters. For the last five years, a DePaul thrower has won the hammer throw competition at the C-USA Championships. Former All-American and current assistant coach Carey Ryan won the event in 2000, 2001 and 2002 followed by Jahnke in 2003 and 2004. Larry Inanga took seventh place in the 400-meter dash with a finals time of 48.22.
The DePaul women’s track and field team finished in 12th place in the team standings. Erin Moffett and Leah Rygh claimed individual titles in the 3000-meter steeplechase and 1500 meters, respectively.
Running through a downpour, Moffett won the steeplechase with a time of 10:48.95. Rygh was victorious in the 1500 meters with a school record-time of 4:27.53. She broke her own school record set at last year's C-USA Championship.
Updating the Recordbook
On seven occasions this season, the DePaul women’s outdoor track and field recordbook needed an update. A total of three relay records fell while Erin Moffett claimed three new marks in two events.
Moffett broke a pair of DePaul outdoor records this season. She set new marks in the 3000 meters and 3000-meter steeplechase events. In the 3000 meters, she posted a record-time of 9:56.72 at the Notre Dame Spring Opener and set a new record in the steeplechase of 10:29.22 at the Penn Relays. Her record time at the Penn Relays broke her then-record mark of 10:31.92 set at the start of the outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays.
At the C-USA Championships, two school records were set by the Blue Demons. Leah Rygh broke her own school record in the 1500-meter run with a new time of 4:27.53 while the 4x100-meter relay team of Dee Moore, Marissa Petersen, Mary Hodges and Diana Runnels set a new school record of 47.42.
Two other relay records fell in 2004 in the 4x200-meter and sprint medley relays. Moore, Petersen, Hodges and Runnels also teamed up to set a new record in the 4x200-meter relay at the Drake Relays in 1:40.66. At the Raleigh Relays, the team of Dee Moore, Marissa Petersen, Diana Runnels and Leah Rygh set a new school record in the sprint medley relay with a time of 4:00.07.
