Aug. 5, 2011
NEW ORLEANS – The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the 2011 Division I All-Academic Track and Field team on Wednesday. A total of 663 female and 420 male student-athletes were chosen as USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees, including four from DePaul in Matthew Graham, Tim Nedow, Melissa Fraser, and Mary Cate Quiett.
Graham, Nedow, Fraser, and Quiett were selected based on their academic and athletic success during the 2011 indoor and outdoor season. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualify standard in their respective event.
Nedow, who was also chosen for the USTFCCCA All-Academic team last season, finished 14th in discus at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships, earning the junior second-team All-American honors. He also placed 19th at the same championships in shot put. During the indoor season, Nedow became the first DePaul student-athlete to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships since 2002 when he participated in the shot put event and was crowned as the BIG EAST Conference Champion in indoor shot put.
Graham was honored for the third straight season. As a junior, Graham scored points for DePaul in the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships as he placed seventh in the men’s 5,000m run. In the Indiana State University Dual Meet, Graham placed first in the 3,000m steeplechase, and in the DePaul Invitational, he took home first in the 5,000m run.
Quiett, who was recently chosen as the 2010-11 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award recipient for women's indoor track and field, concludes her Blue Demon career as a four-time selection on the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field team. This past season, Quiett garnered All-BIG EAST honors in the outdoor 800M and was named the BIG EAST Runner of the Week twice.
Fraser awas named to her third straight USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team. She won her third BIG EAST Champion title this season when she picked up first place in the javelin throw with a 51.95m distance. She also broke the school record in the hammer throw this past spring with a distance of 56.82m and later placed second in the event in the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.
The USTFCCCA will award All-Academic Team status to institutions on Wednesday, August 10 (men) and Thursday, August 11 (women).
