Track and Field and Cross Country Signs Three to a National Letter-of-Intent



CHICAGO- DePaul head cross country and track and field coach Pat Savage announced the signing of three student-athletes to a National Letter-of-Intent.  A pair of Chicago natives, Stephanie Hughes and Griffin Lawler, join Mary Cate Quiett of Mishawaka, Indiana to run cross country and track for the Blue Demons in 2007-08.

 

Hughes, a senior at Lane Tech, won four consecutive Chicago Public League cross country titles and four straight Illinois High School Association regional cross country titles.  She finished 32nd at this fall’s IHSA AA Cross Country State Championship with a personal-best three-mile time of 17:49.  On the track, Hughes is a three time IHSA sectional champion and three time Chicago Public League champion in the 3,200m run.  In the 1,600m run she has picked up two Chicago Public League titles.  In addition, she earned All-American status at the 2006 USA Track and Field Junior Olympics in the 1,500m and 3,000m events.

 

Lawler, a senior at Whitney Young, took 35th at the 2006 IHSA AA Cross Country State Championship with a time of 14:57.  He has also earned two Chicago Public League cross country titles and one regional cross country championship.  During the 2006 track season, Lawler posted a mile time of 4:31.24 to win the sectional championship and qualify for the IHSA State Championship.

 

A senior at Marian High School, Quiett has twice been honored as Northern Indiana Conference MVP in both cross country and track.  As a junior, she placed eighth at the state cross country championship and second at the state track championship in the 800m run.  She holds her high school’s individual records in the 400m dash (58.14) and the 800m run (2:13).  She is also a member of the school record holding 4x400m relay and 4x800m relay squads.

 

The Blue Demons open their 2006-07 indoor track and field season December 1 at the Blue and Gold Invitational in Notre Dame, Indiana.
