Gordon Thomson Named to USA Track & Field Coaching Staff

CHICAGO – DePaul cross country/track and field head coach Gordon Thomson has been named a men’s assistant coach for the upcoming IAAF World Junior Championships next summer.  He will coach the United States’ top distance runners at the 10th World Junior Championships, July 13-18, 2004 in Grosseto, Italy.  Top athletes age 19 and younger from around the world will be competing in Italy.

The IAAF World Junior Championships will be Thomson first national team coaching assignment.  In 1991 and 1992, he travled to Scandinavia with two groups of emerging elite distance runners for the United States.

“Some of the athletes that make this World Junior team will end up making the USA Olympic team in 2008 and beyond,” said Thomson.  “This is a phenomenal opportunity for me to help youngsters to follow their dreams.”

Since 1997, Thomson has served as the Olympic development chair for the 3000-meter Steeplechase.
