DePaul Journeys to GVSU for the Holiday Open

CHICAGO After putting up an impressive 10 BIG EAST Conference qualification marks during last week’s Blue and Gold Meet, the DePaul track and field squad looks to continue the trend on Friday at the Holiday Open hosted by Grand Valley State.

Grand Valley, located in Allendale, Mich.,  plays host to several schools throughout the Midwest including Alma, Spring Arbor, Sienna Heights, Aquinas, Lewis, Tiffin, Toledo, Hillsdale, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Oakdale, Indianapolis, Chicago State, Indiana Tech, and Lake Superior State.

Although the meet began today with the pentathlon events, the Blue Demons get things started tomorrow at 3 p.m. (CST) in the Laker Turf Building when the field events begin.

Last time out, freshman Alanna Kovacs earned her first BIG EAST nod when she hit a mark of 13.03m in the shot put to place third.  Brad Millar, two-time BIG EAST hammer throw champion, also surpassed conference qualifying standards in the weight throw.  He threw for a distance of 17.11m to finish third.

Senior Stephanie Williams went two-for-two in the 60m and 200m dash, taking first place in each.  Her times of 7.74 and 25.24, respectively, also exceeded the conference standard marks of 7.85 and 25.50.

Picking up right where she left off last season, sophomore Mary Cate Quiett won her first race of the season, picking up BIG EAST qualification marks along the way.  Her 1,000m time of 2:55.85 was just three tenths shy of her own indoor record of 2:55.35.

Senior Joseph Strawder picked up two conference qualifying marks, placing first in the long jump with a distance of 7.14m, and finishing second in the triple jump with a mark of 13.84.

This is the first of two indoor meets DePaul has scheduled at Grand Valley State.  On January 23, the Blue Demons head back to West Michigan for the Bob Eubanks Invitational.
