DE KALB, Ill. - The DePaul men's cross country team was doing a nice job of pack running.

Now, all the Blue Demons needed was a leader of the pack.

Eddie McDaniel came through on Friday night, winning the NIU Open in a time of 19:02.34.

"Eddie ran a great race and crossed the finish line ahead of everyone else," said DePaul assistant cross country coach Leah Bohr. "He made a nice improvement from last week."

Teammate Herald Alvarez came in at eighth with a time of 19:35.01 and right on his heels was Max Clink in a time of 19:36.13.

Rounding out the Blue Demon pack were Andrew Diehn (13th), Zak Koronkiewicz (14th) and Chris Miedema (17th) to give DePaul six finishers in the top 20.

"Our guys wanted to make their presence felt against Marquette," Bohr said as the Golden Eagles finished first in the 6K race. "Those guys are from the BIG EAST Conference, and that was motivation for us.

"Our coaching staff is very happy with our guys' races."

DePaul wound up in third place, just one point behind Illinois-Chicago.

Jacqueline Kasal was DePaul's top finisher on the women's side at No. 29 as the Blue Demons finished fifth. Northwestern won the women's 5K race and Marquette was second.

DePaul's next race is Friday, Sept. 14 at the National Catholic Championship in South Bend, Ind.
