Cross Country Opens 2006 Season

CHICAGO- The DePaul men’s and women’s cross country teams kick off their 2006 campaign this Saturday at the UIC Opener in Palos Park, Ill.  The meet, hosted by Illinois-Chicago, takes place at Horsetail Lake, beginning with a women’s race at 10:00 a.m. followed by a men’s race at 10:30 a.m.

In addition to DePaul and UIC, the field of competition brings squads from Loyola-Chicago, UW-Green Bay, St. Xavier and Chicago State.  The meet places the women in a two mile race while the men run 4.1 miles.

Five returning seniors form the backbone of head coach Pat Savage’s squads as they enter their second season as a member of the BIG EAST Conference.  Anthony Becknek and Richard Byrne look to lead the men’s team while Kelly Cunningham, Carrie Moffett, and Colleen Stiles-Shields lead the women.

"This is a new era of cross country running for DePaul.  This is one of the largest, if not the largest, turnouts ever.  Both the men and women have been working very hard the last two weeks.  All the athletes have a great attitude,” Savage said.

The 2006 regular season builds up to the BIG EAST Conference Championship in Boston.
