Cross Country Wins UIC Opener



PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. The DePaul men’s and women’s cross country teams opened their 2007 campaign by sweeping both team titles at the UIC Opener on Saturday in Palos Park.  Claire Duck won the women’s race and Nick Schaefer won the men’s trek as the Blue Demons defeated seven women’s teams and six men’s teams in head-to-head scoring.

 

Duck completed the women’s two-mile course with a time of 11:09 and crossed the line 16 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.  In her first collegiate cross country race, Mary Cate Quiett took third place with a time of 11:29.  Terah Cheatham finished fifth with a time of 11:30 and Stephanie Hughes placed 10th with a time of 11:41.  Reda Josifi rounded out DePaul’s top-five finishers at 21st with a time of 12:20.

 

Schaefer conquered the men’s 4.1-mile course with a time of 20:51, finishing 24 seconds in front of the second place runner.  Luke Rygh and Eoin Dunne finished third and fourth, respectively, with times of 21:23 and 21:27.  Richard Byrne placed eighth with a time of 21:42, while Jeremy Applebaum closed out the Blue Demons’ top-five with an 11th place finish and a time of 21:47.

 

In head-to-head scoring, DePaul’s women defeated UIC, 18-43; Loyola-Chicago, 22-33; UW-Green Bay, 15-46; Chicago State, 15-50; Northwestern, 25-30; St. Xavier, 20-35; and UW-Milwaukee, 15-45.  The men’s team topped UIC, 18-42; Loyola-Chicago, 16-47; UW-Green Bay, 15-50; Chicago State, 15-50; St. Xavier, 23-36; and UW-Milwaukee, 15-50.

 

The Blue Demons return to action on Saturday, September 8 at the Fordham Invitational in the Bronx, New York.
