CHICAGO - DePaul's cross country teams will continue to push forward Friday when they compete in the NIU Open beginning at 5 p.m. on the NIU North 40 course in DeKalb, Ill.

The men's team will square off with Marquette, Illinois-Chicago and Chicago State in a 6K race while the women will encounter host Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Marquette, UIC and Chicago State in a 5K race.

Eddie McDaniel headed the Blue Demon pack with a fourth-place finish at last week's Earlybird Invitational in Elmhurst. The junior from south suburban Oak Forest came in with a time of 19:01.5 in the 6K race.

Ian Sanchez wasn't far behind in eighth place while Herald Alvarez came in 10th as DePaul finished second to defending NCAA Division III national champion North Central.

On the women's side, Jacqueline Kasal was 14th in a time of 15:18.9 for the 4K race. Taylor Hynes was 19th and freshman Molly Shiroishi was 28th as the Blue Demons wound up third behind the University of Chicago and St. Francis University.

The DePaul coaching staff is looking for another strong effort from McDaniel, Sanchez and Alvarez along with Max Clink, Zak Koronkiewicz and Chris Miedema. The coaches are counting on Kasal, Hynes and Shiroishi along with Hannah Pulliam, Michelle Allen and Alexandra Muller on the women's team.

Marquette is the team to beat on the men's side with five returnees from a team that finished seventh in the BIG EAST Championships and eighth in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional last year. The Golden Eagles were ranked No. 8 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region preseason poll.

Northwestern won the women's title in last year's NIU Open and wound up fifth in the 2011 NCAA Midwest Regional. Marquette was ninth at the BIG EAST Championships last season while NIU won the UIC Opener last week in south suburban Palos Heights.
