Duck and Schaefer Pace Cross Country in New York



NEW YORK Claire Duck won the women’s 5K race and Nick Schaefer finished 16th in the men’s 8K trek as the DePaul men’s and women’s cross country teams ran at the Fordham Invitational on Saturday.  The Blue Demons placed third in the women’s standings and fourth in the men’s standings at the Bronx’s Van Courtland Park.

Duck crossed the line with a time of 18:38 to win her second race in as many weeks.  Mary Cate Quiett followed in 16th place with a time of 19:19 and Terah Cheatham finished 17th at 19:20.  Stephanie Hughes placed 29th with a time of 19:58, while Reda Josifi rounded out DePaul’s top-five with a 70th place finish and a time of 21:12.

Schaefer paced the men’s team for the second consecutive week with a time of 27:04 and Jakub Kolacz followed in 19th place at 27:15.  Ryan Solomon finished 53rd with a time of 28:16, while Richard Byrne placed 67th at 28:48.  Jeremy Applebaum closed out the Blue Demons’ top-five finishers as he placed 69th with a time of 28:50.

The women’s team combined for a score of 118 in a field of 23 squads, placing three points in front of Northwestern.  Princeton topped the standings with a score of 20, while BIG EAST Conference rival Rutgers placed 10th with a total of 289.

DePaul’s men posted a total score of 160 in a field of 22 squads as Penn won the team title with a score of 42.

A select group of Blue Demons stayed in Chicago on Saturday to race at North Park’s Ted Hedstrand Invitational.  Shannon Lane placed 12th in the women’s 5K race with a time of 22:10, while Rob Morgan took second in the men’s 8K race with a time of 26:47.

DePaul returns to action on Friday, September 14 at the National Catholic Championships in Notre Dame, Indiana.
