McDaniel Named BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete of Week
Sept. 11, 2012
CHICAGO – What a difference a year makes for DePaul’s Eddie McDaniel.
McDaniel was selected a BIG EAST Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week Tuesday after winning the NIU Open last Friday in DeKalb, Ill.
McDaniel, who ran in just two races last season, earned the accolade in just the second race of the 2012 season.
“This is a big deal for us as Eddie is the first distance runner to win that award since Matthew Graham last year,” said Blue Demon assistant cross country coach Andrew Craycraft. “It means a lot in a distance-heavy league like the BIG EAST.
“He took the lead about a quarter-mile into the race and never looked back. The gap between him and second place was never less than 30 meters for most of the race.
“It was a tough course with two loops and he needed to run with a lot of confidence. He beat some good competition including runners from Marquette.”
McDaniel’s 6K time of 19:02.34 was more than four seconds ahead of Marquette’s Connor Callahan.
“He has a lot of heart,” Craycraft said of the junior from south suburban Oak Forest. “When he is determined to do something, he doesn’t let anything get in his way.”
Connecticut junior Lauren Sara was the women’s BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
DePaul’s next meet is Friday at the National Catholic Championship in South Bend, Ind.
