SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Junior Carrie Moffet and senior Anthony Becknek paced the Blue Demons with a pair of top-15 finishes at the National Catholic Cross Country Championships Friday afternoon at the Notre Dame Golf Course. The women finished ninth out of 20 teams, while the men finished 16th out of 33.

Moffet finished the 5K race in a career best 18:39.  The junior's 15th place finish is her second top-15 finish of her career.  Moffet finished second at the Great American Classic last weekend.

Mo Kuhta crossed the finish line in a time 19:32 for 39th place.  Kelly Cuningham (20:10), Colleen Stiles-Shields (20:29), and Emily Prettyman (20:38) were the next three Blue Demons finish to finish the course.

Becknek finished the five mile course in 25:24 and in sixth place to pace the men.  Robert Morgan and Ryan Solomon both finished in the 27th minute, while Clayton Smith and Dan Graca finished steps apart in the 28th minute of the race.

Notre Dame's  Patrick Smyth (24:36) and Sunni Olding (17:42) won the men's and women's races.  The Fighting Irish Women took home the women's championship while Duquesne University won the men's title.

The National Catholic Championships were conceived in 1980 and feature participants from numerous prominent Catholic institutions around the country, representing a cross-section of squads from the NCAA Division I, II and III, and NAIA levels. This year's three races (men's and women's varsity, plus a junior varsity/open event) saw approximately 500 competitors from 35 different schools compete in one of the country's largest in-season meets.

The Blue Demons will return to action October 1 when they participate in the Sean Earl Classic along Chicago's lakefront.  Races begin at 10:30 am.
