Season Best Marks Lift Men to Third and the Women to Seventh Place
CHICAGO Hot conditions couldn’t slow the DePaul men’s and women’s cross country teams down today at the 36th Annual Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational. Despite temperatures nearing the 80 degree mark, 14 Blue Demon runners logged season-best performances in the men’s 8K and women’s 5K.
Matthew Graham continued to pace DePaul, as he has all season, with a 15th place finish in a time of 25:19. Jakub Kolacz, who has also consistently placed in the Blue Demon top-five, finished just behind Graham with a 25:24. Their average mile paces of 5:05.6 and 5:06.6, respectively, are the fastest the two have recorded to date during the 2008 season.
Luke Rygh was the third Blue Demon to cross the line at the 25:56 mark to place him in 38th. Greg Udzielak and Rob Morgan matched their season-best paces recording a 26:09 and 26:15, respectively, to place 47th and 52nd.
With a score of 144, DePaul took third place out of 34 teams. They beat out Loyola-Chicago, by a margin of 93 points after loosing to them earlier in the season at the DePaul Opener. Winning the title with 44 points was Malone.
Mary Cate Quiett led the Blue Demon women, crossing the finish line in 19th place with a time of 18:40. Terah Cheatham finished just nine seconds behind her teammate to finish 31st. Stephanie Hughes logged her fastest 5K of the season with a 50th place finish in a time of 19:16. Recording a time of 19:26, Kelly Pickering picked up 27th place. Claire O'Brien placed in the DePaul top-five for the first time this season with personal-best mark of 19:40.
The team placed seventh overall out of 32 teams with a total of 224 points. Northwestern won the team competition logging a score of 76.
Daniel Steinfels (27:54) and Rob Galvin (30:28) recorded season-best paces today. Posting their fastest 5K times to date were Kelsey Dolan (19:56), Erin Lakie (20:08), Toni Salvatore (20:22), Cari Krikorian (20:37), Reda Josifi (20:55), Kirstyn McGuinness (22:21), and Alicia McDermott (22:27).
Next up for the Blue Demon’s is the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Illinois on Oct. 17.
