Volleyball Letterwinner Sarah Cullen

May 2, 2012

Our new weekly feature "Behind the Bricks" allows DePaul letterwinners a chance to tell the DePaul community a little bit about themselves, a brief reflection on their time as a Blue Demon student-athlete and where they have gone since stepping off the court, field or diamond.

This feature was renamed "Behind the Bricks" to coincide with the dedication of the John and Dale Melbourne Herklotz Letterwinners Plaza and Champions Courtyard. With the plaza filled with 3,800 bricks representing DePaul's student-athletes since 1926, each brick has a story. "Behind the Bricks" will allow letterwinners to tell their "DePaul Story".

What does being a DePaul Letterwinner mean to you?
Being a DePaul Student-Athlete Letterwinner makes me proud. I am extremely honored to have had the opportunity to compete, work with, and create relationships with such amazing individuals. I will forever remember my DePaul Family.

Why did you choose DePaul?
I chose DePaul because it is a prestigious university where I was able to earn a quality education and compete athletically at a high level in the BIG EAST Conference. Plus, I was close to my family and in America's BEST city!

What was your favorite memory while at DePaul?
My favorite memory while at DePaul was beating St. Johns and taking them out of the running for an NCAA Tournament selection in 2009.

What did receiving a scholarship from DePaul mean to you?
I was given an incredible opportunity that many people only dream of. I am proud to have earned a scholarship to attend DePaul University.

What was your funniest memory at DePaul?
My funniest memory while at DePaul was the pre-game experience before match against Rutgers in 2009.

Brief Summary of your life from graduation till now:
After graduation I knew that I was not done with volleyball or collegiate athletics. My previous assistant coach, Matt Jennings, was at the University of Pittsburgh and offered me an opportunity to coach volleyball at Pitt and I accepted it! From that opportunity I knew that coaching volleyball was what I was going to do for the rest of my life. I am now the full-time assistant volleyball coach at Georgetown University.

Is there a recent highlight that you would like to share with Alumni and friends of DePaul Athletics?
I currently coach at Georgetown and this fall we played DePaul at McGrath Arena and at the match there were a total of nine of my former teammates/roommates and other DePaul student-athletes) at the match. DePaul not only gave me an education, and a BIG EAST athletic experience; but DePaul gave me life long relationships and memories that can never be taken away.

What advice would you give to a current or future student-athlete?
Enjoy the time you have left, these are the BEST days of your life.
