Behind the Bricks

Our new weekly feature "Behind the Bricks" allows DePaul letterwinners a chance to tell the DePaul community a little bit about themselves, a brief reflection on their time as a Blue Demon student-athlete and where they have gone since stepping off the court, field or diamond.

This feature was renamed "Beyond the Bricks" to coincide with the dedication of the John and Dale Melbourne Herklotz Letterwinners Plaza and Champions Courtyard. With the plaza filled with 3,800 bricks representing DePaul's student-athletes since 1926, each brick has a story. "Beyond the Bricks" will allow letterwinners to tell their "DePaul Story".

1. What does being a DePaul Letterwinner mean to you?

I had the privilege to compete for a tremendous coach, and I had no idea I would be so fortunate in that way before I signed here.  I know many players who do not speak fondly of their college coaches and I am totally opposite.  I know I wouldn't be the player I am today if it wasn't for learning under Coach Bruno and I am thankful that I can still stop by DePaul and visit with him.

2. Why did you choose DePaul?
At the time it was the best situation for me that fulfilled my desire to live in a major metropolitan city and play for a winning program.  My mom grew up in Illinois as well.

3. What was your favorite memory while at DePaul?
Beating #3 ranked Louisiana Tech in Alumni Hall

4. What did receiving a scholarship from DePaul mean to you?
I accomplished my goal of wanting to play college basketball, and earn a degree without having any debt when I graduated!

5. What was your funniest memory at DePaul?

Any interaction between Latasha Byears and Coach Bruno imitating her slang. Pure comedy!

6. Brief Summary of your life from graduation till now:

10-year professional basketball career in WNBA and overseas in 8 countries.  7 years with the Nigerian National Team, participated in 2004 Olympics and 2006 Fiba World Championships.  Visited 26 countries while playing, which fulfilled a dream of mine to travel the world.  Received a Master of Science in 2008 in Sport Administration.

Today I have a severely jacked up right knee from two surgeries and wear and tear, but I wouldn't trade my arthritis or discomfort for any of my experiences.

7. What advice would you give to a current or future student-athlete?

Work hard on your craft and don't be afraid to take chances or fail.  Failure is a part of life and helps you appreciate success later.  Figure out whether you want to make money in your career or not and then pick a major accordingly.  Put off serious relationships until you get to know yourself, which takes YEARS!  You need to live your own life and have your own experiences before sharing your life with someone else.  Always put yourself and your best interests before someone elses.
