Cancun Challenge Info

CHICAGO – The 2018 Women’s Cancun Challenge basketball tournament announced on Tuesday that DePaul will compete in the Riviera Division of the event set for Nov. 22-24 in Cancun, Mexico.

The Blue Demons, ranked No. 14 in the Way-Too-Early Top 25 for the 2018-19 season by Charlie Crème of ESPN.com, will meet No. 23 Syracuse, Kansas State and Princeton in a three-game, round-robin bracket.

Pairings and game-day details will be announced later in May.

The 14th edition of the Cancun Challenge welcomes a rich pool of talent from the most accomplished conferences along with an intriguing mix of mid-major teams looking to flex their muscle. The Women’s Challenge will be held at the all-inclusive Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Teams playing in the two-game Mayan Division are George Washington, Georgia Tech, Idaho State, Kennesaw State, Michigan State and No. 16 North Carolina State. This will be the third trip to the Yucatan for Kansas State (2007, 2011), Michigan State (2007, 2011) and Idaho State (2011, 2016).

It’s the second time to the Hard Rock Hotel for Princeton (2014), NC State (2015) and Georgia Tech (2015) while 2018 marks the debut appearances for DePaul, Syracuse, Kennesaw State and George Washington.

In addition to the Cancun Challenge, DePaul was notified by the NCAA on Tuesday that it was the nation’s 2017-18 statistical champion in three-point field goals per game and will receive a plaque recognizing the achievement.

The Cancun Challenge is one of the premier basketball events held each year and was rated as a top-five early-season tournament by Sports Illustrated in 2014. Teams stay and play at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya.

The resort’s convention center ballroom is converted into an arena that provides fans a close-up view of the games. Once arriving to the hotel, teams and fans are treated to a spectacular all-inclusive rock star vacation with games, practices, unlimited dining and drinks, world-class entertainment and fun all in one location.
