MILWAUKEE – Cleveland Melvin knocked down five three’s en route to 22 points, but it wasn’t enough as DePaul fell at Marquette, 66-56, on Saturday afternoon. Billy Garrett Jr. added 10 points as the Golden Eagles captured the 113th meeting in the all-time series.

Melvin hit three triples in-a-row to help DePaul (8-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) take a 30-26 lead at intermission. The Blue Demons entered the game with a 6-0 record when leading at halftime this season, but saw Marquette post a 40-point second half to finish the 10-point defeat for the Blue Demons.

DePaul led throughout the game before Davante Gardner’s basket in the lane gave Marquette (9-6, 1-1 BIG EAST) a one-point advantage at 44-43 with 7:38 left in the game. It was the first lead for the Golden Eagles since scoring the first basket of the game.

Following a steal by Brandon Young, Charles McKinney put DePaul ahead 47-46 with 5:33 left, but that was the last time the Blue Demons would hold the advantage as Marquette finished the game by outscoring DePaul by a margin of 20-9 for the 66-56 final.

DePaul’s 10 three-pointers as a team was the second-highest total of the season, but the Blue Demons were just 2-of-4 from the free throw line. Durrell McDonald added nine points and three assists off the bench to follow up Melvin and Garrett.

Gardner led all scorers with 28 points and Jamil Wilson added 14 for Marquette.

DePaul returns to Allstate Arena for the first time since Dec. 18 with a Tuesday night game against Creighton. The Blue Demons and Bluejays are scheduled for an 8 p.m. game in Rosemont on FOX Sports 1 and WSCR 670 The Score.
