NEWARK, N.J. – DePaul battled Seton Hall all afternoon, but couldn’t overtake the Pirates in an 82-77 loss at Prudential Center. Marin Maric scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Blue Demons.

A layup by Brandon Cyrus gave DePaul a 23-21 lead with 8:19 left before halftime before Seton Hall put together a 17-3 run to build a 12-point lead. Two free throws by Myles Powell gave the Pirates a 38-26 advantage with just over three minutes on the clock.

Tre’Darius McCallum sank a three-pointer from the corner with nine seconds left to make the score 38-36 at intermission. McCallum made the final four points of the run that also featured buckets from Eli Cain, Justin Roberts and Max Strus.

After Maric opened the second half with a layup to tie the game, Seton Hall (18-9, 7-7 BIG EAST) scored the next six points for a lead it wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the afternoon. DePaul stayed within striking distance as Seton Hall’s lead remained in single digits and a late run saw the Blue Demons move to within a possession of tying the game.

Trailing by nine points with 2:08 left, three free throws by Cain followed by a scooping layup and a free throw by Roberts pulled the Blue Demons with 77-74 in the final minute. After two free throws by Desi Rodriguez for Seton Hall, Strus drilled a three-pointer from the wing to pull the Blue Demons to within two points.

Needing to foul, DePaul sent Seton Hall’s Jordan Walker to the line and he made one of two shots to push the Pirate’s lead back to three points. On DePaul’s final possession, the Blue Demons came up empty before Rodriguez made two free throws to secure the win for Seton Hall.

Maric went 10-for-12 from the floor including a 2-of-3 effort from three-point range for his 23 points and eight rebounds.
