Blue Demons Bounce Back Monday Night

CHICAGO – Four in double-figures led DePaul over visiting Delaware State as the Blue Demons notched their first victory of the 2017-18 season. DePaul led from start-to-finish coasting to an 81-57 win at Wintrust Arena.
 
Tre’Darius McCallum led DePaul with 17 points and six rebounds while Jaylen Butz enforced his will on the glass all evening to the tune of seven points and 13 rebounds. Others in double-figures included Max Strus with 15 points, Eli Cain with 11 and Devin Gage with 10 points.

Strus led the way early in the evening scoring five points to help the host to a 10-3 lead. Midway through the first half McCallum finished a two-handed alley-oop pass from Devin Gage with authority, giving the host a 19-6 advantage. The Blue Demons would lead by as much as 20 in the opening half, however, behind a 10-0 Delaware State run, the Hornets went into the half trailing 35-21.

Out of the intermission, Strus treated the Wintrust Arena crowd by beating his defender baseline and then climbing the Delaware State defender rotating to help for an emphatic right-handed slam. With 8:16 remaining a McCallum three from the corner gave DePaul a 62-41 advantage, capping a 9-0 DePaul run that put the game out of reach for Delaware State. The Blue Demons would hold onto their advantage and led by as many as 26 in the final minute.

Kobe Gantz posted a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead Delaware State (1-1) while Simon Okolue added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Up next for DePaul (1-1) is the Gavitt Tipoff Games date at Illinois. The Blue Demons and Illini meet for the first time since December 1957 on Friday night in Champaign. Start time is 7:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network and WIND.

Postgame Notes

  • The win was the first for DePaul at Wintrust Arena.
  • The 13 rebounds by Jaylen Butz are the most in a game by a DePaul player since November 2013... Cleveland Melvin grabbed 13 boards against Wright State on Nov. 16, 2013.
  • Marin Maric reached the 1,000-point plateau in his collegiate career... he scored 989 points in 96 career game at Northern Illinois before playing as a graduate student this season at DePaul.
  • Devin Gage scored in double-figures for the second time in as many games this season... he did it twice in 31 games a year ago... his eight assists are a new career high.
  • Monday’s game was the first meeting between the two programs.
