Blue Demons Drop Tight Road Game at Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. – Despite holding Illinois State without a field goal over the final 6:57, the DePaul men’s basketball team couldn't knock off the Redbirds in a 69-64 loss on Sunday. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Blue Demons.
A back-and-forth first half saw Illinois State take an early four-point advantage before the Blue Demons rallied behind Brandon Young and Durrell McDonald to take a 21-16 lead with 8:26 left. The Redbirds answered and went back ahead before Young knotted the score at 34-34 on a 22-footer with 31 seconds left. However, Nick Zeisloft beat the buzzer with a three of his own and Illinois State took a three-point lead at intermission.
DePaul opened up a seven-point advantage early in the second half with a 13-3 run. A jumper by Billy Garrett Jr. gave DePaul (7-5) a 47-40 lead just over four minutes into the second half.
Illinois State (7-5) didn’t go away took a 51-50 lead on a three-pointer by Daishon Knight with just over eight minutes left. Knight knocked down another bucket and McDonald tied the game with a three from the corner before Illinois State went 11-for-12 from the free throw line and held off a late charge from the Blue Demons.
Trailing by eight, Garrett hit two free throws followed by a three-pointer before Greg Sequele hit a free throw to make the score 66-64 with 1:45 left. After Knight made one of two free throws, Brandon Young’s bid to tie the game from long range misfired and the Redbirds held on to defeat the Blue Demons.
Garrett finished with a career-high 18 points while Young added 17 with seven rebounds. McDonald scored 10 points off the bench and Sandi Marcius pulled down 11 rebounds with four points.
Knight led Illinois State with 16 points and Zach Lofton added 14 off the bench.
DePaul wraps up the non-conference slate on Friday night at Northwestern. Start time at Welsh-Ryan Arena is scheduled for 8 p.m.
Notes: The loss ended DePaul’s six-game winning streak in non-conference road games... the Blue Demons entered the game with the nation’s fourth-longest streak in that category... Brandon Young (1,546 pts.) moved into ninth on DePaul’s all-time scoring list... Young (109 3pt. FG) also moved into a tie for 13th place on the all-time three-point field goal list... Sandi Marcius recorded his second career game of at least 10 rebounds... Cleveland Melvin’s four points matched his career low as a starter (four vs. Notre Dame on Feb. 3, 2011 as a freshman)... Sunday was the 25th meeting between the two programs... DePaul leads the series, 21-4... the game was the first meeting since Dec. 1996.
