Tulane Tops DePaul
ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Waitari Marsh scored 21 points and Brandon Brown added 13 Saturday as Tulane beat DePaul 73-63 in the Conference USA opener for both teams.
DePaul (7-5, 0-1) had a four-game winning streak snapped, including a 63-62 win Dec. 29 over then-No. 10 Missouri. The Green Wave (9-3, 1-0) stopped a two-game losing streak.
Sam Hoskin scored 20 points and Andre Brown added 18 for the Blue Demons, who cut into a double-digit deficit in the second half, but missed several chances to tie or take the lead.
Brandon Brown led the Green Wave with eight points as Tulane opened up a 21-9 lead midway through the first half. DePaul got back within 25-20 by going to Hoskin for its next 11 points.
Tulane led 33-26 at the half as DePaul shot only 32 percent from the field.
DePaul got within four soon after the break, but Tulane built the lead up to 48-37 on Marsh's layup with about 10 minutes left.
The Blue Demons then turned up their defense, using small guards Marlon Brooks and Rashon Burno to force turnovers on four straight Tulane possessions. DePaul converted the mistakes into points, and got within 50-48 with possession of the ball at the 7:30 mark.
But Tulane turned the Blue Demons away several times thereafter, and the Green Wave went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by Nick Sinville's alley oop dunk from Brandon Spann, to go ahead 58-48 with about four minutes to go.
Sinville had 10 points for the Green Wave, which shot 62 percent in the second half.
