Blue Demons Meet Red Storm Saturday in Queens

CHICAGO - DePaul travels to New York for a Saturday afternoon game against the St. John’s Red Storm. Saturday is the 40th all-time meeting between the two programs. Start time between the Blue Demons and Red Storm at Carnesecca Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.

Saturday’s game will be televised on FOX Sports Networks with Rich Ackerman (play-by-play) and John Thompson III (analyst) handling the television duties. St. John’s is 10-5 overall this season and 0-3 in BIG EAST action following a 78-71 loss at Creighton on Wednesday. The Blue Demons stand at 7-8 overall and 0-3 following a 90-81 loss to Georgetown on Tuesday DePaul head coach Dave Leitao is in his sixth season at DePaul and his third since returning to the program after leading the Blue Demons three postseasons in three years from 2002-05. Overall, the 2017-18 campaign is Leitao’s 12th as a head coach at the collegiate level. St. John’s is led by Chris Mullin who is in his third season leading the Red Storm.

DePaul-St. John’s Share Common Mission: DePaul and St. John’s are two of four universities in the world founded by the Vincentians. DePaul, St. John’s and Niagara were founded in the 19th century in the United States and Adamson University, located in Manila, Philippines, was acquired by the Vincentians in 1964.

All four schools are based on the Vincentian values of service, justice, charity and advocacy and provide a college education to many first-generation college students.

Noting the Blue Demons: The men’s basketball program is 1,444-995 (.592) all-time... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 754 straight games... DePaul’s last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the current streak started against Notre Dame on Feb. 21, 1993... DePaul is playing every home game under the same roof for the first time since the 2009-10 season... the last seven seasons have seen the Blue Demons play home games at Allstate Arena and McGrath-Phillips Arena... DePaul is 40-42 all-time in games that go to overtime... the Oregon game on Nov. 24 was the first overtime game this season.

The Opponent - St. John's Red Storm: St. John’s stands at 10-5 overall and 0-3 in the BIG EAST following a 78-71 loss at Creighton on Wednesday night... St. John’s has also dropped games to Providence and Seton Hall to open BIG EAST play... Shamorie Ponds leads the team with a scoring average of 19.5 points per game... five players are averaging in double-figures... following Ponds are Marcus LoVett (14.9 ppg), Bashir Ahmed (12.3 ppg), Marvin Clark II (11.4 ppg) and Justin Simon (10.8 ppg)... Simon also leads the team with 7.7 rebounds per game... head coach Chris Mullin is in his third season at St. John’s... DePaul head coach Dave Leitao is 1-3 all-time against St. John’s.

The Series: Saturday is the 40th all-time meeting between the two programs... the Red Storm holds a 22-17 advantage in the series... St. John’s won both meetings last season... the Red Storm posted a 79-73 decision on Jan. 1 at Allstate Arena followed by a 78-68 win over DePaul on Jan. 16 at Carnesecca Arena... 11 of the last 15 meetings have been decided by nine points or less including three overtime games.

It Could Happen: A win would be No. 1,445 in program history... a three-pointer extends DePaul’s streak to 755 consecutive games with a three-pointer... Eli Cain needs 11 points to become the 50th player in program history with 1,000 career points... his 989 points are ranked 51st in school history... Marin Maric is playing in his 110th career game... Max Strus needs 21 points for 300 this season and six three’s for 50 this season... with two three’s, Strus moves into the top 25 on the single-season three-point field goal list.

Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul’s 90-81 loss against Georgetown on Tuesday:
- At least four players scored in double figures for the 11th time in 15 games this season... a year ago, the occurrence happened in six of 32 games.
- Eli Cain passed Dar Tucker (2007-09, 986 points) and Al Zetzsche (1966-69, 988 points) on DePaul’s all-time scoring list and his 989 points are ranked 51st on the career scoring list.
- Cain’s career-high 10 assists are the most by a DePaul player this season... it’s the first 10-assist game by a DePaul player since Billy Garrett Jr.’s 10 assists on Feb. 25, 2016 against St. John’s.
- Tre’Darius McCallum led DePaul in rebounds for the seventh time this season... he has totaled at least seven boards in five straight games.
- Max Strus scored in double figures for the 14th time this season... his 19 points ended a streak at four games with at least 20 points.
- Georgetown leads the all-time series over DePaul, 30-8... the two teams meet again in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 24.

Trendy: The Blue Demons have placed at least four players in double-figures in 11 of the first 15 games including three games with five in double-figures... a year ago, at least four scored in double-figures six times (32 games)... five different players have led DePaul in scoring this season... DePaul has committed less turnovers than the opponent in 12 of 15 games... however, in three straight games against Villanova, Xavier and Georgetown, DePaul has committed more miscues... among the league’s freshmen, only Jaylen Butz and Villanova’s Omari Spellman are ranked in the top 30 rebounders... DePaul is second in the league with 12.3 offensive rebounds per game... the Blue Demons are third with a .330 offensive rebound percentage and tied for fourth in the league with a +2.7 turnover margin... over the first three conference games, DePaul leads the league with a +6.3 rebounding margin and is tied for first with 41.7 rebounds per game and 14.0 offensive rebounds per contest... the Blue Demons are also second with a .372 offensive rebound percentage and third with 18.3 assists per game in conference play.

Game 17 - Jan. 12 vs. Providence: DePaul hosts Providence on Friday, Jan. 12 at Wintrust Arena... the game will be an all-access broadcast on FS1... both coaches will be mic’d and the game will be broadcasted primarily with three screens and no commercial interruptions... Providence is currently 10-6 overall and 1-2 in BIG EAST play... the Friars host Xavier on Saturday... Providence holds a 28-10 advantage in the all-time series... last season saw the two sides split the season series with each school winning on its home floor.
