CHICAGO - DePaul travels to New York for a Saturday afternoon game against the St. John’s Red Storm. Saturday is the 40th all-time meeting between the two programs. Start time between the Blue Demons and Red Storm at Carnesecca Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
Saturday’s game will be televised on FOX Sports Networks with Rich Ackerman (play-by-play) and John Thompson III (analyst) handling the television duties. St. John’s is 10-5 overall this season and 0-3 in BIG EAST action following a 78-71 loss at Creighton on Wednesday. The Blue Demons stand at 7-8 overall and 0-3 following a 90-81 loss to Georgetown on Tuesday DePaul head coach Dave Leitao is in his sixth season at DePaul and his third since returning to the program after leading the Blue Demons three postseasons in three years from 2002-05. Overall, the 2017-18 campaign is Leitao’s 12th as a head coach at the collegiate level. St. John’s is led by Chris Mullin who is in his third season leading the Red Storm.
DePaul-St. John’s Share Common Mission: DePaul and St. John’s are two of four universities in the world founded by the Vincentians. DePaul, St. John’s and Niagara were founded in the 19th century in the United States and Adamson University, located in Manila, Philippines, was acquired by the Vincentians in 1964.
All four schools are based on the Vincentian values of service, justice, charity and advocacy and provide a college education to many first-generation college students.

The Opponent - St. John's Red Storm: St. John’s stands at 10-5 overall and 0-3 in the BIG EAST following a 78-71 loss at Creighton on Wednesday night... St. John’s has also dropped games to Providence and Seton Hall to open BIG EAST play... Shamorie Ponds leads the team with a scoring average of 19.5 points per game... five players are averaging in double-figures... following Ponds are Marcus LoVett (14.9 ppg), Bashir Ahmed (12.3 ppg), Marvin Clark II (11.4 ppg) and Justin Simon (10.8 ppg)... The Series: Saturday is the 40th all-time meeting between the two programs... the Red Storm holds a 22-17 advantage in the series... St. John’s won both meetings last season... the Red Storm posted a 79-73 decision on Jan. 1 at Allstate Arena followed by a 78-68 win over DePaul on Jan. 16 at Carnesecca Arena... 11 of the last 15 meetings have been decided by nine points or less including three overtime games.
It Could Happen: A win would be No. 1,445 in program history... a three-pointer extends DePaul’s streak to 755 consecutive games with a three-pointer... Eli Cain needs 11 points to become the 50th player in program history with 1,000 career points... his 989 points are ranked 51st in school history... Marin Maric is playing in his 110th career game... Max Strus needs 21 points for 300 this season and six three’s for 50 this season... with two three’s, Strus moves into the top 25 on the single-season three-point field goal list.
Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul’s 90-81 loss against Georgetown on Tuesday:
- At least four players scored in double figures for the 11th time in 15 games this season... a year ago, the occurrence happened in six of 32 games.
- Eli Cain passed Dar Tucker (2007-09, 986 points) and Al Zetzsche (1966-69, 988 points) on DePaul’s all-time scoring list and his 989 points are ranked 51st on the career scoring list.
- Cain’s career-high 10 assists are the most by a DePaul player this season... it’s the first 10-assist game by a DePaul player since Billy Garrett Jr.’s 10 assists on Feb. 25, 2016 against St. John’s.
- Tre’Darius McCallum led DePaul in rebounds for the seventh time this season... he has totaled at least seven boards in five straight games.
- Max Strus scored in double figures for the 14th time this season... his 19 points ended a streak at four games with at least 20 points.
- Georgetown leads the all-time series over DePaul, 30-8... the two teams meet again in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 24.
Trendy: The Blue Demons have placed at least four players in double-figures in 11 of the first 15 games including three games with five in double-figures... a year ago, at least four scored in double-figures six times (32 games)... five different players have led DePaul in scoring this season... Providence is currently 10-6 overall and 1-2 in BIG EAST play... the Friars host Xavier on Saturday...
