Blue Demons Make Quick Turnaround for Game at Butler

INDIANAPOLIS - Just under 48 hours after a loss Tuesday night against 23rd-ranked Creighton, DePaul looks to bounce back at Butler in the first meeting between the two schools since Feb. 1981. Start time is 7 p.m. ET at Hinkle Fieldhouse as the Blue Demons look to snap a three-game skid to start conference action.

Thursday’s game will be televised on FOX Sports 1 with Mike Gleason (play-by-play) and Jim Jackson (analyst) handling the television duties. DePaul enters the game at 8-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play after the 81-62 loss against Creighton on Tuesday. DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is in his fourth season at DePaul and his 26th as a head coach at the collegiate level. Butler is 10-4 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST and is led by Brandon Miller who is in his first season leading the Bulldogs.

Following the Butler game, DePaul is off until next Tuesday when the St. John’s Red Storm. The fellow Vincentian basketball program visits Allstate Arena for a 6 p.m. start on FOX Sports 1 and 670 The Score.

Busy Blue Demons: DePaul is in the midst of a busy stretch to start the conference schedule. The Butler game is the fourth of four games in a 10-day span to begin BIG EAST action. DePaul started the run with road losses at Georgetown on Dec. 31 and Marquette on Jan. 4 followed by the home loss to the Bluejays on Tuesday.

The Blue Demons are the only team to play four league games over the first 10 days of the conference calendar. In addition to the tight schedule, three of the four games are on the road making DePaul and Villanova the only two programs in the BIG EAST to open conference play with three of the first four on the road. The Wildcats plays three of four road games over the first 12 days of the BIG EAST calendar.

Following the busy start, the schedule relaxes as DePaul plays its next three games - with two at Allstate Arena - over an 11-day span. As the Blue Demons start the conference slate with three of four on the road, the league circuit ends with three of four at home from Feb. 22-March 6.

Noting the Blue Demons: The men’s basketball program is 1,403-909 (.607) all-time... the 80-71 win at Milwaukee on Nov. 19 was game No. 2,300 in program history since the first fully-recognized season in 1923-24... men’s basketball was played at DePaul prior to that season but records are incomplete... the 81-70 win over Florida Atlantic on Dec. 12 was win No. 1,400 since start of 1923-24 season... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 627 straight games... DePaul’s last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the Blue Demons are 322-154 (.677) all-time at Allstate Arena... The Opponent: Butler stands at 10-4 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST following a 79-68 loss at Xavier on Jan. 4... Kellen Dunham leads the team with 17.9 points per game while Khyle Marshall adds a scoring average of 15.9... Kameron Woods nearly averages a double-double with 9.2 points and a team-high 9.4 rebounds per game... head coach Brandon Miller is in his first season at Butler... DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is 1-0 all-time against Butler.

The Series: Thursday is the seventh all-time meeting between the two programs... the Blue Demons hold a 5-1 advantage in the series... the meeting is the first since an 89-64 win for DePaul on Feb. 23, 1981... Butler won the first meeting during the 1938-39 season by a score of 39-29 at the Chicago Armory... two two sides met in the 1940-41 season, twice during the 1970’s and twice in the 1980’s.

The Last Meeting: DePaul knocked off Butler, 89-64, at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Feb. 23, 1981... that DePaul team was ranked in the AP top four throughout the season and was No. 3 against the Bulldogs... the 1980-81 squad finished the regular season at No. 1 in the AP poll before being upset in the NCAA First Round by Saint Joseph’s... Mark Aguirre led the team with 23 points per game during the season.

It Could Happen: A win snaps a season-high three-game losing streak... Cleveland Melvin (683 rebs.) needs seven rebounds to pass Jim Flemming (689 rebs., 1958-61) for 18th place... Melvin also needs one steal for 100 in his career... with two blocked shots, Melvin (120 blocks) passes Jeff Stern (121 blocks, 1990-92) for fourth all-time... Brandon Young (1,589 pts.) needs 25 points to pass Dallas Comegys (1,613 pts., 1983-87) for eighth on the all-time scoring list.

Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul’s 81-62 loss against Creighton on Jan. 7:
- With his six rebounds, Cleveland Melvin moved into 19th place all-time.
- Brandon Young scored a season-high 24 points... Young reached double-figures for the 12th time this season and 86th in his career... he reached the 20-point plateau for the 25th time in his career
- The Blue Demons are now 6-2 this season when Melvin and Young combine for 30 or more points.
- Billy Garrett Jr. was held scoreless for the first time in his career (16 games).
- The Blue Demons have now hit a three pointer in 627 straight games... DePaul’s last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena.
- DePaul leads the all-time series 15-8 against Creighton... this was the first meeting between the programs as members of the BIG EAST Conference.

Trending: The four straight road games that finished at Marquette on Saturday was the longest run of consecutive regular-season road games since the 2000-01 season... that squad played four straight roadies from Jan. 25-Feb. 3 at USF (L, 72-58 on Jan. 25), Louisville (L, 73-63 on Jan. 27), Saint Louis (W, 86-68 on Jan. 31) and Cincinnati (L, 91-70 on Feb. 3)...
