Blue Demons Face USF at Allstate Arena



CHICAGO - DePaul returns to the Allstate Arena for the first time since Dec. 31 with a Saturday matinee against the USF Bulls. The Blue Demons enter the game at 8-8 overall and 0-3 in BIG EAST play while USF is 5-9 and 0-2 in league action. DePaul opened conference play with losses to Notre Dame, Providence and Syracuse while the Bulls have fallen in BIG EAST games against Syracuse and Louisville. Saturday is the 20th meeting with DePaul holding a 15-4 advantage in the series. Since joining the BIG EAST, the Blue Demons are 4-0 against the Bulls and have six straight wins over USF.

Saturday’s action can be seen online at ESPN360 (www.espn360.com). Dave Kaplan (play-by-play) and Jim Chones (analyst) handle the television duties at Allstate Arena. DePaul’s radio duo of Zach Zaidman and Laurence Holmes are calling the game on WSCR (670 AM) in Chicago.

Following the USF game, DePaul doesn’t play again until Saturday, Jan. 17 against the Cincinnati Bearcats. The Blue Demons and Bearcats square off at Allstate Arena at 1 p.m. before DePaul faces USF in Tampa on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

Noting the Blue Demons: DePaul has attempted more free throws then their opponent in 13 of 15 games this season... the Blue Demons’ 217 free throws made this season are just six less than the 223 combined attempts for their opponents... only Notre Dame on Dec. 31 has attempted more free shots than DePaul while Syracuse shot the same amount on Jan. 7... when knocking down at least seven three’s this season, DePaul is 5-1... in each of Jerry Wainwright’s three full seasons at DePaul, the Blue Demons have defeated at least one top 25 opponent... DePaul has used five different starting line-ups this season... the Blue Demons have donned the black uniforms twice this season in a win over UIC on Nov. 22 and a loss at Providence on Jan. 3... only four times in program history have the Blue Demons sported the alternate jersey/shorts combination... they are 1-3 in those games.


The Opponent: USF stands at 5-9 overall and 0-2 in BIG EAST play... the Bulls have dropped league game at home to Syracuse and Louisville... in addition to the two straight defeats, USF has dropped four its last five games... Dominique Jones leads the team with 16.6 points per game... Jesus Verdejo adds 15.0 points and a team-high 37 three-pointers... as a team, USF is shooting just .569 (173-304) from the free throw line... head coach Stan Heath in his second season at USF... he has 17-28 record with the Bulls and is 129-105 in his eighth overall season.

The Series: Saturday is the 20th meeting between the two programs... DePaul holds a 15-4 advantage in the series with six straight victories... the Blue Demons are 4-0 all-time in BIG EAST game against the Bulls... at DePaul, the Blue Demons have won eight of nine meetings... the Bulls are one of three league teams DePaul faces this season... the Blue Demons make the trip to Tampa on Jan. 20.

Last Meeting: DePaul rallied from a 16-point deficit at Allstate Arena for a 69-61 win over USF on Feb. 9, 2008... the Blue Demons trailed, 32-21, at half before outscoring the Bulls, 48-29, in the second period... Draelon Burns led DePaul with 22 points and Will Walker added 21... USF was led by Kentrell Gransberry’s 18-point, 14-rebound double-double.

It Could Happen: Jabari Currie needs two assists for sole possession of 18th on DePaul all-time list... he enters the USF game with 278 helpers (Joe Daughrity, 279 - 1990-92)... a loss would make DePaul 0-4 to start a conference season for the first time since the 2001-02 season... that team started Conference USA play at 0-5... a win would extend DePaul streak to seven straight wins over USF.

Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul’s 85-68 loss at No. 11/9 Syracuse on Jan. 7:
- DePaul is 0-3 to start conference play for the first time since the 2001-02 season.. that squad started the Conference USA schedule at 0-5.
- The Blue Demons are 0-3 this season against ranked teams... all three teams have been ranked in the top 16 at game time.
- Devin Hill returned to the starting line-up for the first time since Dec. 28 against Alcorn State... he had missed the first two BIG EAST games with an ankle injury.
- Hill has blocked at least one shot in 12 of 14 games this season... the four rejections against the Orange marked his fourth game this season with at least four blocks... he just missed his first career double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
- Dar Tucker passed the 700-point plateau in the second half... the sophomore ran his streak to 20 straight games in double-figures.
- Will Walker notched his 75th career game.
- With 12 points, Mac Koshwal tallied his 30th career game in double-figures... he has also grabbed at least 10 rebounds in seven straight games after his 12-point, 13-rebound effort... he has six double-doubles in the last seven games.
- The seven blocked shots for the Orange were the most by a DePaul opponent this season.
- Wednesday was the 10th all-time meeting between the two programs... the Orange holds a 6-4 lead in the series... Syracuse is now 3-1 all-time against DePaul at home... in BIG EAST play, the Orange has three wins in four meetings.

Get It Out of Here: Devin Hill has been on a blocked shot binge as of late. In his last 11 games, the 6-9 freshman has recorded 27 blocks. Hill already has 31 rejections on the season topping Mac Koshwal’s team-leading 24 blocked shots last season.

Allstate Arena: DePaul is playing its 29th season at the Allstate Arena (formerly Rosemont Horizon) in 2008-09. The Blue Demons are 281-102 (.734) all-time in Rosemont. DePaul has won 26 of its last 38 Allstate Arena games.

On The Air: For the 11th consecutive season, DePaul games are broadcast on WSCR (670 AM). Zach Zaidman and Laurence Holmes will call the action this season.

Wainwright Show: The Jerry Wainwright Show on WSCR will air on Mondays at 8 p.m. starting Jan. 5. Blue Demon play-by-play announcer Zach Zaidman handles the hosting duties. The Jan. 12 show has been moved up an hour to 7 p.m. Wainwright also checks in Thursday mornings with Laurence Holmes from 10:35-50 a.m.
