Blue Demons Host Providence on Thursday Night
CHICAGO - The DePaul Blue Demons return to Allstate Arena for a BIG EAST game against Providence on Thursday night. Thursday's game is the first in eight days for the Blue Demons and the first since the change in leadership of the program. Tracy Webster was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season on Monday, Jan. 11.
DePaul is 7-8 overall and 0-3 in BIG EAST action following the 99-72 loss at No. 6/6 Villanova on Jan. 6. The Blue Demons finished the non-conference portion of the regular-season schedule with a 7-5 record. DePaul dropped two of the last three non-conference games after starting the season with a 5-1 record. DePaul posted a 4-1 record in November before a 3-5 mark in December.
Providence is 10-6 overall and 2-2 in BIG EAST games following a 94-81 win over Rutgers on Jan. 9. Thursday is the 27th all-time meeting between DePaul and Providence with the Friars holding a 20-6 advantage in the series.
The game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. The game can be seen nationally on ESPN2 with Dave Pasch (play-by-play) and Doris Burke (analyst) handling the television duties. Following the Providence game, the Blue Demons travel to St. John's for a Sunday afternoon date at Carnessca Arena. The game can be seen live on ThisTV in Chicago as part of the BIG EAST Network and heard live on WSCR (670 AM). DePaul comes back to Allstate Arena next Wednesday to host Marquette at 8 p.m.
Noting the Blue Demons: The men's basketball program is 1,364-821 (.624) all-time... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 505 straight games... DePaul's last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the win over Columbia in the season opener ended an 18-game losing streak in regular-season games... the Blue Demons have won four of their first five games in two straight seasons... Opponent No. 16 - Providence Friars: Providence enters Thursday's action with a 10-6 overall record and 2-2 mark in BIG EAST play... the Friars knocked off Rutgers, 94-81, in their last game on Jan. 9... Providence posted an 8-4 record over the non-conference portion of the schedule... Jamine Peterson leads three players in double-figures with 17.8 points per game... he also adds a team-high 10.6 rebounds per outing... DePaul University played its first season in 1980-81 at the then-named Rosemont Horizon. The Blue Demons debuted in Rosemont with a 74-56 win over Gonzaga and John Stockton on Dec. 1, 1980.
