DePaul Rolls Past Tulane
NEW ORLEANS, La. – DePaul had three players in double figures and rode that balance to post an 81-63 Conference USA win over Tulane on Saturday at New Orleans Arena.
The Blue Demons improved to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in C-USA while the Green Wave fell to 6-9 and 0-4.
Senior Quemont Greer continued his outstanding season, leading DePaul with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Drake Diener and Sammy Mejia each added 15. Tulane was led by Marcus Kinzer’s 18 points.
“I think our maturity was a big factor in getting this win,” DePaul head coach Dave Leitao said. “We have some guys who have played in a lot league road games and they entered today with the right mentality and the younger players took the lead from them and we were able to get the W.”
The Blue Demons opened the game with a 5-0 run before Tulane took a 6-5 lead on Kinzer’s jumper with 15:14 to play in the first half. DePaul then answered with a jumper by LeVar Seals nearly 30 seconds later and never trailed from that point on.
The Blue Demons took a 42-29 lead into halftime powered by Greer’s 17 first half points.
The second stanza was more of the same as DePaul pushed the advantage to as much as 20 on two occasions (the last time being at 77-57 with 3:45 to play) behind Mejia’s 11 second half points.
DePaul will return to action again on Thursday when Marquette comes to the Allstate Arena for the 100th meeting between the two schools. The contest begins at 8 p.m. (CST) and will be televised by ESPN2 and broadcast on WSCR (670 AM) in Chicago.
Notes: Quemont Greer has scored 20 or more points in 10 of his last 11 games… Drake Diener now needs five three-point field goals to become the school’s all-time leader... today was DePaul’s first game at Tulane under head coach Dave Leitao… the 18-point win was DePaul’s largest margin of victory in a C-USA road game under Leitao.
