Blue Demons Come Up Short at Notre Dame
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Will Walker scored a career-high 35 points, but Notre Dame registered three double-doubles and 30 points from Tim Abromaitis in an 87-77 decision over DePaul on Saturday. Devin Hill added 15 and Mike Stovall also scored 14 points for the Blue Demons.
Notre Dame (15-5, 4-3 BIG EAST) scored the first seven points of the game and hit its first seven attempts of the afternoon to build an 18-8 lead. Walker's second three-pointer trimmed the deficit to five before the Irish increased the margin to nine with just under 15 minutes left in the first half.
The Irish built their lead to 14 points just before halftime and took a 37-27 lead at the break.
DePaul (8-11, 1-6 BIG EAST) hovered within 10-15 points over most of the second half before a 7-2 run pulled the Blue Demons to within five. Stovall capped the flurry with a three-pointer from the wing to make the score 77-71 with 1:10 left. However, on Notre Dame's next possession, Abromaitis found Luke Harangody on an alley-oop and sealed the game for Notre Dame.
The Irish hit eight straight free throws in the final 48 seconds for the 87-77 final.
Walker led all scorers with his career-high 35 points. The senior added five rebounds and four assists while Hill grabbed eight boards to go along with his 15 points.
Harangody (24 pts./11 rebs.), Ben Hansbrough (15 pts./10 rebs.) and Tyrone Nash (13 pts./10 rebs.) each tallied a double-double while Abromaitis added six rebounds to his 30 points for Notre Dame.
DePaul opens a two-game homestand on Tuesday night against West Virginia. The Mountaineers and Blue Demons tip off at 7:30 p.m. at Allstate Arena.
