R.J. Curington Selected as BIG EAST Rookie of the Week
Feb. 3, 2014
CHICAGO – DePaul freshman guard R.J. Curington was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week this morning by the league office and is the third different player to earn the weekly recognition. He joins fellow rookies Billy Garrett Jr. and Tommy Hamilton IV on the Rookie of the Week list.
Curington put together the best game of his freshman season on Saturday with 22 points and five rebounds against Providence. He also added an assist in 30 minutes while going 7-for-15 from the field overall that included a 3-o-f-8 effort from behind the arc. The Dyer, Ind., native also hit 5-of-6 free throws in his second straight game in double-figures.
Since the start of the 2008-09 season, no BIG EAST school has had more than two different players earn Rookie of the Week honors in the same season. Hamilton was the first honoree of the season on Nov. 18 followed by Garrett claiming the award on four different occasions on Dec. 2, 16, 30 and Jan. 20.
Doug McDermott from Creighton was the BIG EAST Player of the Week and the weekly honor roll consisted of Georgetown's Markel Starks, Bryce Cotton from Providence, D'Angelo Harrison of St. John's, Seton Hall's Fuquan Edwin and Villanova's James Bell.
DePaul hosts Georgetown on Monday night at 8 p.m. The game can be seen nationally on FOX Sports 1 and heard locally on WSCR 670 AM. For ticket information, contact the DePaul ticket office at (773) 325-SLAM.
