CHICAGO - DePaul takes on Notre Dame for the second time in 12 days and the 104th time overall on Wednesday night at Purcell Pavilion. The Irish posted a 79-71 win in overtime in the first meeting this season on Feb. 2 at Allstate Arena.
The Blue Demons and Irish are scheduled for a 7 p.m. ET start with DePaul looking to snap an eight-game losing streak that was extended on Saturday afternoon with an 89-78 loss at No. 24 Marquette. Notre Dame has won four of its last five including a 104-101 win in five overtimes against No. 11/12 Louisville on Saturday night.
Wednesday's game will be televised on The U Too (WCIU-DT2) in Chicago as part of the BIG EAST Network with Jim Barbar (play-by-play) and Brooke Weisbrod (analyst) handling the television duties. The broadcast is also available online on ESPN3. DePaul stands at 10-13 overall and 1-9 in the BIG EAST while No. 21/21 Notre Dame holds a 19-5 overall record and 7-4 mark in league play. DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is in his third season at DePaul and his 25th as a head coach at the collegiate level. Notre Dame's Mike Brey is in his 13th season leading the Irish.
Following the Notre Dame game, DePaul returns to Allstate Arena to play Rutgers on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Demons and Scarlet Knights are scheduled for a Noon start on ESPNU and WSCR 670 AM.
Noting the Blue Demons: The men's basketball program is 1,394-893 (.610) all-time... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 602 straight games... The Last Meeting: Jack Cooley scored 26 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Notre Dame over DePaul, 79-71, in overtime on Feb. 2 at Allstate Arena... DePaul trailed by as many as 12 points early in the second half before outscoring the Irish by a 22-9 margin... two free throws by Worrel Clahar tied the score and put DePaul ahead by one with 9:24 left... neither team led by more than two points with the score tied on six occasions over the final nine minutes of the second half... Notre Dame held DePaul to just a free throw in overtime... Brandon Young led five DePaul players in double-figures with 15 points... Cleveland Melvin (10 rebounds) and Jamee Crockett each added 13 points... Donnavan Kirk scored 11 and Charles McKinney scored 10... It Could Happen: A win snaps a season-high eight-game losing streak... it also ends a 39-game losing streak for DePaul against ranked opponents... DePaul's last win over a ranked opponent was an 84-76 victory over No. 17/16 Villanova on Jan. 3, 2008... Cleveland Melvin (1,302 points, 531 rebounds) needs five points to move into 20th on DePaul's scoring list and three rebounds to move into 14th all-time... with 10 points, Brandon Young (1,224 points) moves into DePaul's top 25 scorers.
Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul's 89-78 loss at No. 24/-- Marquette on Feb. 9:
- Marquette leads the series, 68-44... Saturday was the 112th meeting between the two programs... the Golden Eagles have won the last four games.
- Brandon Young became the first player since Rod Strickland with at least 100 assists in three straight seasons... Young's six assists at Marquette give him 103 for the season.
- Young scored at least 20 points for the sixth time this season (19 career)... it was his 65th career game in double-figures.
- Donnavan Kirk scored a career-high 16 points... his previous high was 14 on two occasions... it marked his fourth game this season (sixth career) in double-figures.
- Worrel Clahar matched his career best with 16 points... he also scored 16 against Marquette last season on Feb. 6... Clahar's three three-pointers match a career high (third time)... he has made three three's in each of the last two games.
Fun With Numbers: With 103 assists this season, Brandon Young is the first player since Rod Strickland (1985-88) with at least 100 assists in three straight seasons... DePaul has combined to shoot at least .900 from the free throw line in two games this season (minimum 10 attempts)... it is the first time since the 1999-00 campaign with at least two games (minimum 10 attempts) with a .900 or better... DePaul's .900 (18-20) mark at St. John's on Jan. 30 was the highest team free throw percentage since going 13-for-13 against Minnesota on Nov. 24, 2011 at the Old Spice Classic... the Blue Demons bettered that mark at Marquette on Feb. 9 with a free throw percentage of .917 (11-12)... St. John's is the only team to defeat DePaul this season when shooting less than 40 percent... Blue Demons are 5-1 when holding opponents under .400 from the field... Blue Demons in the NCAA & BIG EAST Stat Rankings: Through games of Feb. 10, DePaul is 46th in the NCAA rankings with an average of 8.4 steals per game, 52nd with a scoring average of 73.3 points per game and 60th with 4.5 blocks per game. Through games of Feb. 11, the Blue Demons are third in steals (8.43 spg), third in scoring (73.3 ppg) and fifth in blocked shots (4.52 bpg) among the 15 BIG EAST programs.
Individually, Brandon Young is ranked among national leaders in scoring, field goal percentage, assists, steals and assist-to-turnover ratio while Cleveland Melvin is ranked in scoring, field goal percentage, rebounds and double-doubles. Donnavan Kirk is also ranked among the top shot blockers.
In the BIG EAST rankings through games of Feb. 11, Cleveland Melvin is the league's only player ranked among the top 10 in scoring and rebounding and Young is the lone player ranked in the top seven in scoring and assists. Melvin is fourth in rebounding and eighth in scoring with Georgetown's Otto Porter as the next-closest player at third in rebounding and 11th in scoring. Young is seventh in scoring and assists with Connecticut's Ryan Boatright as the next-closest player at eighth in assists and ninth in scoring. Who's Next: The Blue Demons play Rutgers on Saturday at Allstate Arena... the game will be the ninth meeting between the two programs... the Scarlet Knights lead the series, 5-3... a year ago, DePaul posted a 69-64 win at Rutgers on Jan. 25... Rutgers stands at 12-10 overall and 3-8 in BIG EAST action... the Scarlet Knights host Seton Hall on Tuesday night.
