Strong Free Throw Shooting Sends DePaul Past Southern Miss In Overtime
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- DePaul made 11-of-12 free throws in overtime and posted its first C-USA road win of the season, beating Southern Mississippi 74-69 at Reed Green Coliseum on Saturday.
The Blue Demons' Sam Hoskin led all players with 19 points and 12 rebounds. He was also a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. It was Hoskin's second-consecutive double-double and he increased his consecutive free throw streak to 29-straight.
The Blue Demons (13-8, 5-5 Conference USA) finished the game shooting 23-of-27 free throws. Southern Miss (10-12, 3-8 C-USA) was led by Charles Gaines' 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Quemont Greer scored 14 points for the Blue Demons.
A jump shot by Drake Diener gave DePaul a 58-57 lead with 30 seconds left in the game.
Mario Myles put the game in overtime when he made the second of two free throws with just under ten seconds remaining. DePaul had a chance to win the game but Greer missed a jumper at the buzzer.
Marlon London opened the overtime with a three-point field goal but Southern Miss was able to take a one-point lead at 65-64 on a free throw by Gaines with 2:23 remaining. On the next possession, Hoskin was fouled and made both free throws to give the Blue Demons a lead they would never lose.
DePaul continues its road trip on Tuesday at East Carolina (6 p.m. CST).
