CHICAGO - DePaul travels to No. 11 Georgetown for a Wednesday night BIG EAST game in the nation’s capital. The game is ends a four-game stretch that features three road games. The Blue Demons dropped games at Marquette and Notre Dame on the road before knocking off Rutgers on Saturday afternoon. DePaul and Georgetown are scheduled for a 7 p.m. ET at the Verizon Center.
The Blue Demons enter the game looking for back-to-back conference wins for the first time this season. DePaul has come up short in overtime in three of its last five defeats including two against Notre Dame on Feb. 2 and 13. Georgetown owns a seven-game winning streak following a 61-58 loss at USF on Jan. 19.
Wednesday’s game will be televised on The U Too in Chicago as part of the BIG EAST Network with Mike Corey (play-by-play) and Bob Wenzel (analyst) handling the television duties. The broadcast is also available online at ESPN3. DePaul stands at 11-14 overall and 2-10 in the BIG EAST while Georgetown holds a 19-4 overall record and 9-3 mark in league play. DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is in his third season at DePaul and his 25th as a head coach at the collegiate level. Georgetown’s John Thompson III is in his ninth season leading the Hoyas.
Following the Georgetown game, DePaul returns to Allstate Arena for back-to-back games against Connecticut and Louisville. The Huskies visit on Saturday for 7 p.m. game in Rosemont followed by Louisville on Wednesday, Feb. 27.
Noting the Blue Demons: The men’s basketball program is 1,395-894 (.609) all-time... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 604 straight games... DePaul’s last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the Blue Demons are 317-148 (.682) all-time at Allstate Arena... DePaul is 7-1 (.875) all-time in games at McGrath-Phillips Arena... in each of Oliver Purnell’s three seasons at DePaul, the Blue Demons have faced three Chicagoland opponents during the non-conference portion of the schedule with an 8-1 record in those games... in the Purnell era, the Blue Demons are 15-3 (6-0 in 2012-13) when scoring 80 or more points... DePaul has used seven different starting lineups this season... Cleveland Melvin and Brandon Young have started every game this season... The Opponent - Georgetown Hoyas: Georgetown enters Wednesday’s game at 19-4 overall and 9-3 in BIG EAST play... a 62-55 win at Cincinnati on Feb. 15 extended the Hoyas’ win streak to seven straight games... Otto Porter leads the team with 15.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game... Markel Starks adds a scoring average of 12.6 with a team-high 39 three-pointers... head coach John Thompson III is in his ninth season leading the Georgetown program... DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is 0-3 all-time against the Hoyas.
The Series: Wednesday is the 27th meeting between the two programs... Georgetown holds a 20-6 advantage in the series... the Hoyas have won 11 straight against the Blue Demons including all seven BIG EAST meetings... DePaul’s last win against Georgetown was a 78-51 decision on Jan. 22, 1994 at the Rosemont Horizon (now named Allstate Arena)... DePaul’s last win at Georgetown was on Feb. 3, 1991 by a score of 72-63.
The Last Meeting: Jason Clark scored 31 points to lead No. 10/12 Georgetown to an 83-75 win over DePaul on Jan. 17, 2012 at Allstate Arena... Georgetown combined to shoot .526 from the field and went 7-for-13 (.538) from three-point range... Henry Sims added 16 points while Hollis Thompson scored 14 for the Hoyas... Cleveland Melvin led DePaul with 19 points followed by Moses Morgan’s 17 off the bench... Brandon Young also scored 16 points for the Blue Demons... DePaul trailed by 10 early in the second before moving to within two points with just over 14 minutes left... Georgetown answered with six straight points and never looked back in the eight-point victory.
It Could Happen: A win would be No. 425 as a head coach for Oliver Purnell... a win also gives DePaul back-to-back BIG EAST victories for the first time since the start of the 2007-08 conference season... the Blue Demons defeated Villanova and Providence to start the BIG EAST schedule 2-0... Cleveland Melvin (1,340 points) needs 22 points to move into 17th on DePaul’s scoring list... with four points, Brandon Young (1,260 points) moves from 24th place to 22nd place... Young (374 assists) needs 10 assists to move into eighth all-time... with four three-pointers, Young becomes the 17th player in program history with 100 career three-pointers... with three blocked shots, Donnavan Kirk (77 blocks) moves from 14th to 12th on the all-time blocked shots chart.
Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul’s 75-69 win against Rutgers on Feb. 16:
- Rutgers leads the all-time series 5-4... the Blue Demons have won the last two meetings.
- The win snaps a season-high nine game losing streak for DePaul.
- DePaul has made a three-point basket in 604 straight games dating back 20 years to the day (Feb. 16, 1993)
- Cleveland Melvin moved into 18th place all-time on DePaul’s career scoring list with 1,338 career points, passing recent DePaul Hall of Fame inductee Terence Greene (1,334 points)... Melvin finished in double-figures (13 points) for the 21st time this season and 69th time in his career.
- Brandon Young moved into ninth-place all-time on DePaul’s career assist chart with three assists... he now has 374 career helpers, passing Cliff Clinkscales (373 assists).
- Worrel Clahar made his sixth career start in BIG EAST play and eighth of his Blue Demon career, the senior guard finished with a career-high 19 points and finished in double figures for the third time in his past four games.
- DePaul won for just the second time this season with a lower field goal percentage than the opponent... the Blue Demons are 2-13 this season with lower field goal percentage.
- The Blue Demons are 11-1 when leading with five minutes remaining in the second half.
Fun With Numbers: DePaul has scored the same amount of points in back-to-back games on three separate occasions this season (69 vs. Northern Illinois and UMBC, 71 vs. Notre Dame and Villanova, 78 vs. Marquette and Notre Dame)... with 109 assists this season, Brandon Young is the first player since Rod Strickland (1985-88) with at least 100 assists in three straight seasons... DePaul has combined to shoot at least .900 from the free throw line in two games this season (minimum 10 attempts)... it is the first time since the 1999-00 campaign with at least two games (minimum 10 attempts) with a .900 or better... DePaul’s .900 (18-20) mark at St. John’s on Jan. 30 was the highest team free throw percentage since going 13-for-13 against Minnesota on Nov. 24, 2011 at the Old Spice Classic... the Blue Demons bettered that mark at Marquette on Feb. 9 with a free throw percentage of .917 (11-12)... 4 Down to 1?: With four more three-pointers, junior guard Brandon Young joins a short list of players in DePaul history with at least 1,200 points, 300 assists and 100 three-pointers. Young enters the Georgetown game with 1,260 points, 374 assists and 96 three-pointers. Joining him on the short list are Brandon Cole, Tom Kleinschmidt and Sammy Meija.
With the four three-pointers and 26 assists over the remainder of the 2012-13 season, Young will become the only player in program history with at least 1,200 points, 400 assists and 100 three-pointers. The Baltimore native is averaging 4.48 assists over 25 games this season.
Who’s Next: The Blue Demons host Connecticut on Saturday night at Allstate Arena... the Huskies won the first meeting on Jan. 8 by a score of 99-78... Connecticut is 18-6 overall and 7-5 in the BIG EAST... the Huskies host Cincinnati on Thursday... the Huskies lead the series, 9-1.
