Blue Demons Fall in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Steve Novak scored 22 points helping Marquette to a 67-57 victory over the Blue Demons on Sunday.

Drake Diener scored 16 for DePaul (16-7, 8-4). The Blue Demons are two games behind Louisville and Charlotte with four games remaining.

 

Travis Diener, the cousin of DePaul's Drake, scored 15 points for Marquette (18-8, 6-7), coming off a crushing 64-61 loss to Louisville.

 

The Golden Eagles, who had lost six of nine, led for nearly the entire second half, but Drake Diener's 3-pointer brought the Blue Demons to within three at 54-51 with 6:11 left.

 

Marquette then scored five consecutive points, opening a 59-51 lead with 3:25 to go on Todd Townsend's free throw.

 

DePaul pulled within 61-55 on LeVar Seals' rebound basket with 1:49 left, but Quemont Greer missed two free throws on the Blue Demons' next possession. Overall, DePaul was just 3-of-9 from the stripe in the second half.

 

Travis Diener made two free throws for Marquette, Seals missed a driving layup and Novak hit two free throws to give the Golden Eagles a 65-55 lead with 36 seconds to go.

 

Marquette led 31-29 at halftime and scored nine consecutive points early in the second half to open a 40-31 lead on Joe Chapman's 3-pointer with 16:28 left.

 

Greer finished with 13 points.
