Robert Sommers Named Director of Basketball Operations
CHICAGO -- Robert Sommers has been named DePaul's Director of Basketball Operations it was announced by Blue Demon head coach Dave Leitao today.
"I am very pleased to be able to bring Robert on to our staff," Leitao said. "I have known Robert for some time and I believe that he is a quality addition to the DePaul Basketball family. He has a tremendous work ethic and relates to young people very well.
Sommers comes to DePaul after spending the 2001-02 season an a video intern for the Dallas Mavericks.
Prior to joining the Mavericks, Sommers spent three seasons as the assistant coach at Dominguez High School in Compton, California. While at Dominguez, Sommers helped the program to three California Interscholastic Federation state championships and the 2000 squad was crowned national champions by USA Today. Sommers coached Tyson Chandler, the first round pick of the Chicago Bulls who was a McDonald's and Parade All-American as well as the California Player of the Year. Along with Chandler, Dominguez boasted seven other players who would go on to play Division I basketball during Sommers tenure.
Sommers also spent three years at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California as a volunteer junior varsity coach, assistant junior varsity coach and the head freshman coach before moving to Dominguez.
