Wilson Chandler and Tyrone Corbin Open NBA Seasons
Nov. 1, 2012
CHICAGO - As the current edition of DePaul basketball gets ready for its exhibition game on Saturday against Lewis, former Blue Demons Wilson Chandler and Tyrone Corbin opened their NBA seasons Wednesday night. Chandler (2005-07) is in his fifth NBA season while Corbin (1981-85) started his third season as head coach of the Utah Jazz.
Chandler played 20 minutes off the bench for the Denver Nuggets with five points and three rebounds in an 84-75 loss at Philadelphia. In his career, Chandler had averaged 13.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game and also played for the New York Knicks from 2007-11. At DePaul, Chandler averaged 12.9 points and 7.1 rebounds in two seasons before being selected as the 23rd overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Knicks.
Corbin led the Jazz to a season-opening 113-94 win over Dallas on Wednesday. He is beginning his second full season as head coach after taking over duties from Jerry Sloan in February 2011. He is the seventh head coach in Jazz history and just the fourth since the franchise moved to Salt Lake City. Corbin was an honorable mention All-American as a junior and senior at DePaul and averaged 11.5 points per game over his 120 career games for the Blue Demons. As a NBA player, Corbin played in over 1,000 games during his 16-year career with a scoring average of just under 10 points per game.
Corbin joins George Mikan as former DePaul players that went on to coach in the NBA. Mikan was head coach of the Minneapolis Lakers from 1957-58 following his playing career. With Chandler and Corbin making their season debuts Wednesday night, DePaul is one of 15 NCAA programs with at least one player and a head coach in the NBA.
The current DePaul roster plays its lone exhibition game on Saturday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena. DePaul takes on Lewis at 7:30 p.m. following the women's exhibition game.
DePaul's regular season starts on Friday, Nov. 9 against UC Riverside in Lincoln Park at McGrath-Phillips Arena. For season tickets, group packages and single-game tickets call the DePaul ticket office at (773) 325-SLAM.
