CHICAGO - DePaul opens the 2012-13 regular season at McGrath-Phillips Arena against UC Riverside on Friday night. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m. and the game is the third of a basketball tripleheader in Lincoln Park. The Blue Demons and Highlanders tangle following two women’s basketball games of the Maggie Dixon Classic hosted by DePaul.
The regular-season opener can be heard on WSCR 670 The Score in Chicagoland with Zach Zaidman (play-by-play) and Jeff Blanzy (analyst) calling all the action. DePaul enters the 2012-13 season following a 12-19 campaign a year ago while UC Riverside posted a record of 14-17. Head coach Oliver Purnell is in his third season at DePaul and his 25th as a head coach at the collegiate level.
Following the UC Riverside game, DePaul hosts two games at Allstate Arena as part of the Cancun Challenge. The Blue Demons open the Rosemont portion of the schedule on Nov. 15 against Gardner-Webb followed by a Nov. 17 contest against Austin Peay. Both games can be heard on WSCR 670 The Score and seen online on BlueTube.
Season-Opening Notes: Friday night serves as the start of the 90th season of DePaul basketball... with the 91-72 win over UT-Pan American, the Blue Demons are 78-11 all-time in the first game... DePaul has won four straight season openers after a three-game losing streak in first games from 2005-08... the UT-Pan American game was the third all-time season opener at McGrath-Phillips Arena for the Blue Demons.
Noting the Blue Demons: The men’s basketball program is 1,384-880 (.611) all-time... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 579 straight games... DePaul’s last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the Blue Demons are 311-141 (.688) all-time at Allstate Arena... DePaul is 6-1 (.857) all-time in games at McGrath-Phillips Arena... the Blue Demons currently hold a seven-game winning streak against Chicagoland programs that includes victories over Chicago State, UIC, Loyola and Northern Illinois... in each of Oliver Purnell’s two seasons at DePaul, the Blue Demons have faced three Chicagoland opponents during the non-conference portion of the schedule with wins in each meeting.
It Could Happen: A win extends DePaul’s streak to five consecutive season-opening victories... a win improves DePaul’s record in first game to 79-11.
Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul’s 91-74 exhibition win against Lewis on Nov. 3:
- After scoring 68 points in 2010 and 70 in 2011 against Lewis, DePaul finished with 91 on Saturday night...aDePaul shot .596 from the field in the first half
- Donnavan Kirk tallied 10 boards after having just one double-digit rebound game last season... Kirk grabbed 11 boards against Providence on Feb. 25.
- Lewis head coach Scott Trost served as assistant coach under current Blue Demon assistant Brian Ellerbe at Michigan from 1997-2001.
Melvin Earns Preseason All-BIG EAST Nod: The BIG EAST Conference unveiled its preseason picks at the league’s annual media day at the New York Athletic Club. DePaul junior Cleveland Melvin was named to the second team All-BIG EAST preseason team while the Blue Demons were slotted to finish 13th in the preseason poll.
Louisville was a unanimous choice to win the 2012-13 BIG EAST men’s basketball regular-season crown with 14 first-place votes. The league’s head coaches do not place their own teams on their ballots.
Syracuse was tabbed for second place and Notre Dame rounded out the top three in third place. Cincinnati was fourth, followed by Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Marquette, USF, Connecticut and St. John’s. Rutgers is 11th and Villanova is picked for 12th, with DePaul taking the 13th spot. Seton Hall was voted 14th and Providence concluded the preseason poll in 15th place.
Melvin – the league’s top returning scorer – was a second-team preseason selection after earning All-BIG EAST honorable mention honors following the 2011-12 season. Louisville’s Peyton Siva was named the preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year and Pittsburgh’s Steven Adams was picked as the preseason Rookie of the Year.
Wilson Chandler Extends NBA Streak to 38 Straight: With Wilson Chandler (2005-07) playing in Denver’s opener on Oct. 31 at Philadelphia, he extended DePaul’s streak to 38 straight seasons with a former Blue Demon playing in the NBA. Bill Robinzine started the streak with Sacramento Kings in the 1975-76 season. A total of 17 players have played over the 38 straight years of DePaul influence in the NBA.
In addition to Chandler playing this season for Denver, Tyrone Corbin (1981-85) is in his second full season as head coach of the Utah Jazz. Corbin replaced Jerry Sloan during the 2010-11 season when Sloan announced his retirement. Corbin played for nine NBA teams during his pro career from 1985-01.
Who’s Next: DePaul opens play in the Cancun Challenge by hosting Gardner-Webb at Allstate Arena on Thursday, Nov. 15... the Runnin’ Bulldogs open the season at North Carolina on Friday, Nov. 9... they also play against Covenant on Nov. 10 and Lipscomb on Nov. 14 before the trip to Rosemont... Gardner-Webb went 12-10 overall and 6-12 in the Big South last season... the Blue Demons and the Runnin’ Bulldogs are meeting for the first time.
