CHICAGO - DePaul opens the 34th season of play in Rosemont as the Blue Demons host Southern Miss on Wednesday night. The Blue Demons opened the season with a 96-58 win on Saturday at McGrath-Phillips Arena. Start time for the Blue Demons and Golden Eagles is 8 p.m. at Allstate Arena on Wednesday.
Wednesday's game will be televised on FOX Sports 2 with Eric Collins (play-by-play) and Brevin Knight (analyst) handling the television duties. DePaul enters the 2013-14 season following an 11-21 campaign a year ago while Southern Miss posted a record of 27-10. DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is in his fourth season at DePaul and his 26th as a head coach at the collegiate level. Southern Miss is led by Donnie Tyndall who is in his second season leading the Golden Eagles. Wednesday's game is the 10th meeting between the two programs and the first since both schools were members of Conference USA.
Following the Southern Miss game, DePaul continues play in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic against Wright State on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Demons are hosting two games at Allstate Arena in the event before playing in Kansas City on Nov. 25-26. DePaul faces Wichita State on Monday, Nov. 25 and either BYU or Texas on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
Season-Opening Notes: The win over Grambling State on Saturday afternoon served as the start of the 91st recognized season of DePaul basketball... with the 96-58 win, the Blue Demons are 80-11 all-time in the first game of the season... DePaul has won six straight season openers after a three-game losing streak in first games from 2005-08... the Grambling State game was the fifth all-time season opener at McGrath-Phillips Arena for the Blue Demons.
Home-Opener Notes: DePaul is now 85-7 all-time in the first home game of the season... the Blue Demons have won 26 of the last 27 and 74 of their last 77 home openers... the last loss in the home-opening game of the season was a 75-60 defeat against Bradley on Nov. 19, 2005... last season, the Blue Demons defeated UC Riverside, 91-59, at McGrath-Phillips Arena on Nov. 9 before last Saturday's 96-58 win over Grambling State.
Noting the Blue Demons: The men's basketball program is 1,396-901 (.608) all-time... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 612 straight games... DePaul's last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the Blue Demons are 317-151 (.677) all-time at Allstate Arena... DePaul is 8-1 (.889) all-time in games at McGrath-Phillips Arena... in each of Oliver Purnell's three full seasons at DePaul, the Blue Demons have faced three Chicagoland opponents during the non-conference portion of the schedule with an 8-1 record in those games... the 2013-14 schedule features local opponents Chicago State and Northwestern... in the Purnell era, the Blue Demons are 16-3 (6-0 in 2012-13/1-0 in 2013-14) when scoring 80 or more points.
The Opponent - Southern Miss Golden Eagles: Southern Miss stands at 1-0 following a 67-51 win over Jackson State on Nov. 8... Dave Boardingham scored 15 points with nine rebounds and Aaron Brown added 12 points in the victory... the Golden Eagles return three starters and six players from last season's 27-10 squad that reached the NIT quarterfinals... the 27 wins were the most in program history since becoming a Division I program in 1972... DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is 1-1 all-time against Southern Miss.
The Series: Wednesday is the 10th all-time meeting between the two programs... the previous nine games were during DePaul's 10-year run as a member of Conference USA... the Blue Demons have won three straight in the series and are 2-2 all-time at Allstate Arena against the Golden Eagles.
The Last Meeting: Drake Diener scored 18 points and Sammy Mejia added 10 with eight rebounds as DePaul posted a 70-48 victory at Reed Green Coliseum on Jan. 29, 2005... the Blue Demons held the Golden Eagles to a .277 field goal percentage and held a 41-20 rebounding advantage.
Against Conference USA: DePaul is 68-42 all-time against the current membership of Conference USA... the Blue Demons were a member of C-USA from 1995-2005... DePaul is 19-14 all-time against UAB and 6-15 against Charlotte.
It Could Happen: A win makes DePaul 2-0 for the second time in the last four seasons... Brandon Young needs 13 points to move in DePaul's all-time top 15 scorers... with 13 points he passes Quemont Greer (1,397 pts., 2001-05) for 15th place... with 14 points, he passes Terry Cummings (1,398 pts., 1979-82) for 14th place.
Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul's 96-58 win against Grambling State on Nov. 9:
- DePaul improved to 80-11 all-time in season openers... the Blue Demons have won each of their last six opening games... the game was the fifth all-time season opener at McGrath-Phillips Arena and the Blue Demons improved to 8-1 at the facility.
- DePaul improved to 9-0 all-time against the SWAC.
- Oliver Purnell won his 425th game as a collegiate coach and is now 425-343 in 26 years as a head coach.
- Tommy Hamilton IV put up a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds in the first half alone, going on to a final stat line of 16 points, 11 rebounds in his collegiate debut.
- Cleveland Melvin tied a career-high with three three-pointers in the opening half and finished with five... Melvin was a perfect 5-for-5 from the three-point line... the last time a DePaul player was perfect from three-point range was Dec. 5, 2010 when Brandon Young hit all six of his attempts... Melvin is just the fifth player in program history to go perfect from three-point range in a game (minimum five attempts)... Melvin's three just 1:18 into the game extended DePaul's streak of games with a made triple to 612.
- Melvin moved into DePaul's all-time top 10 scorers... he entered the game needing six points to jump into the elite category... the senior finished the game with 1,475 points while passing Howie Carl (1,461 pts., 1958-61) and Curtis Watkins (1,463 pts., 1975-79).
- Peter Ryckbosch recorded career-highs of eight points and five rebounds in 17 minutes of action.
Locally Grown: The 2013-14 DePaul roster features eight players from the state of Illinois. In addition to the eight from Illinois, a total of nine players are from the Chicagoland area.
The nine Chicagoland members on the roster include Jamee Crockett (Chicago, Ill.), R.J. Curington (Dyer, Ind.), Cory Dolins (Northbrook, Ill.), Billy Garrett Jr. (Chicago, Ill.), Tommy Hamilton IV (Chicago, Ill.), Myke Henry (Chicago, Ill.), DeJuan Marrero (Gary, Ind.), Charles McKinney (Evanston, Ill.) and Peter Ryckbosch (Chicago, Ill.).
The eighth state of Illinois native is Champaign's Edwind McGhee.
In addition to Illinois, four states and two countries are also represented on DePaul's roster with Curington and Marrero from Indiana, Cleveland Melvin and Brandon Young from Maryland, Nevada's Durrell McDonald and Forrest Robinson from Texas. Sandi Marcius is a native of Nedelisce, Croatia and Greg Sequele is from Sainte-Rose, Guadeloupe.
Three Decades in Rosemont: DePaul is in its 34th season in 2013-14 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. The Blue Demons are 317-151 (.677) all-time in Rosemont. DePaul played its first season at the then-named Rosemont Horizon in 1980. The Blue Demons debuted in Rosemont with a 74-56 win over Gonzaga and John Stockton on Dec. 1, 1980.
