CHICAGO – After leading all BIG EAST freshman in scoring and rebounding, DePaul’s Tommy Hamilton IV was named the league’s Rookie of the Week on Monday morning. Hamilton averaged 12.3 points and 6.7 rebounds over DePaul’s first three games of the season. Senior forward Cleveland Melvin was named to the league’s Weekly Honor Roll after averaging 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds.
This week’s conference honors cover the start of the 2012-13 regular season. Hamilton opened his collegiate career with an impressive 16-point, 11-rebound double-double against Grambling State on Nov. 9. The Chicago native achieved the feat in the first half alone with 11 points and 10 boards against the Tigers.
Hamilton followed up the season-opening double-double with eight points and four rebounds against Southern Miss on Nov. 13 and 13 points with five boards against Wright State on Nov. 16. The 6-10 center also showcased his range with a three-pointer in each of the last two games.
He is the first DePaul player to earn the league’s Rookie of the Week honor since Melvin and Brandon Young combined for the award on six occasions during the 2010-11 season.
After playing his first three seasons primarily in the post, Melvin has moved out to the wing this season and is .667 (20-30) from the field overall and .667 (8-12) from three-point range through three games. He opened the season with 17 points and four rebounds against Grambling State that saw him go a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range. Melvin is just the fifth player in program history to go perfect from three-point range with a minimum of five attempts.
The Baltimore native led DePaul against Wright State with 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting and a perfect 6-for-6 effort from the free throw line. He added 13 rebounds overall for his 15th career double-double and nearly posted a double-double in the second half alone with nine rebounds while not missing a shot.
In the Nov. 13 game against Southern Miss, Melvin scored 16 points with a pair of three-pointers.
Creighton’s Doug McDermott was the league’s Player of the Week while Melvin was joined on the Honor Roll by Providence’s Bryce Cotton, Fuquan Edwin of Seton Hall, James Bell from Villanova and Xavier’s Semaj Christon.
The Blue Demons stand at 2-1 this season and travel to Milwaukee for a Tuesday night game against the Panthers. Start time is 7 p.m. at U.S. Cellular Arena.
