DePaul Downs Florida State 80-74
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Imari Sawyer did not perform like someone new to college basketball.
Sawyer scored 18 points, had 10 assists and hit a pivotal jumper late in the game as No. 21 DePaul beat Florida State 80-74 Friday in a Great Alaska Shootout consolation game.
"For a freshman to step up in only his third college game and get 18 and 10 is really something," DePaul coach Pat Kennedy said.
Sawyer hit a 12-foot jumper from the wing to stem a Florida State rally after the Seminoles closed to 73-70 on a pair of 3-pointers by Adrian Crawford with three minutes left.
DePaul then scored its final five points on free throws.
The first 15 minutes featured five ties and eight lead changes.
The Seminoles (0-3) stayed close by outrebounding the Blue Demons 39-31.
"We're definitely going to be a work in progress," Kennedy said of his team, which lost 92-84 to Syracuse on Thursday.
Nigel Dixon, the Seminoles' 350-pound center, scored 10 first-half points on putbacks and a variety of power moves. He only had two points after halftime.
Simmons hit two 3-pointers just before the break to give DePaul a a 43-34 lead.
DePaul (2-1) scored two quick baskets in the second half to open a 13-point lead. The Blue Demons then started sending the ball inside to forward Lance Williams, who finished with 17 points.
Crawford led Florida State with 14 points. Forward Michael Joiner added 11.
