Garrett Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, Young on Honor Roll

CHICAGO – DePaul freshman Billy Garrett Jr. was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after putting together his first double-double and averaging 10.7 points and 4.3 assists in three games last week. Senior Brandon Young was also selected to the league’s Weekly Honor Roll following a week that saw him average 17 points and four assists.
Garrett totaled 15 points and 10 assists in DePaul’s 93-81 win over Oregon State on Sunday. In just his second collegiate start, the Chicago native played 36 minutes with 10 assists to only a pair of turnovers while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Earlier in the week at the CBE Hall of Fame Classic, he scored 11 points in his first collegiate start against Texas and finished with six points against Wichita State. In his two starts, Garrett averaged 13 points and six assists while shooting .421 from the field.
Garrett joins Tommy Hamilton IV as a DePaul freshman has claimed the rookie award in two of the first three weeks of the season. Overall, Garrett is the sixth DePaul player to be named a Rookie of the Week joining Wilson Chandler (twice in 2005-06), Hamilton, Cleveland Melvin (four times in 2010-11), Dar Tucker (once in 2007-08) and Young (twice in 2010-11).
Young averaged 17 points with 12 assists and six steals in three games against Wichita State, Texas and Oregon State. He shot .514 (18-35) from the field and averaged 3.3 rebounds per game during the week that started with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists against Wichita State.
He followed that with 14 points, three assists and two steals against Texas before putting together an impressive stat line against Oregon State with 21 points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocked shots in 35 minutes. Young was also assigned as the primary defender against Oregon State’s Roberto Nelson. Nelson scored 19 points, but entered the game averaging 27 points per game and ranked in the nation’s top five scorers.
Villanova’s James Bell was the league’s Player of the Week while Young was joined on the Honor Roll by Butler’s Kellen Dunham, Doug McDermott from Creighton, Georgetown’s D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and D’Angelo Harrison from St. John’s.
The Blue Demons stand at 4-3 this season and host Arizona State on Friday night. Start time is 6 p.m. at Allstate Arena.
