Cleveland Melvin Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Dec. 3, 2012
CHICAGO – DePaul junior forward Cleveland Melvin was named to this week’s BIG EAST Honor Roll after leading the Blue Demons to pair of wins against Fairfield and Auburn. It is the first weekly recognition for Melvin this season after being named to the honor roll three times last year.
Melvin averaged 25.5 points and 8.0 rebounds while shooting .576 (19-33) from the field and .706 (12-17) from the free throw line. The Baltimore native opened the week by matching his career high with 30 points against Fairfield. It was his second career 30-point game and he also matched his career high (fourth time) with three assists and added six rebounds.
He followed that effort up with his second double-double of the season at Auburn with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Melvin added two assists, two steals and a blocked shot while going 6-for-10 from the field and 9-of-13 from the free throw line. With DePaul holding a two-point lead, Melvin stole the ball with 13 seconds left, was fouled and sealed the win for the Blue Demons with two free throws.
Melvin enters Wednesday night’s game at Chicago State with 21 consecutive games in double-figures and 1,071 career points. His point total puts him in a tie for 43rd on DePaul's all-time scoring list.
Syracuse’s James Southerland was named BIG EAST Player of the Week while James Robinson of Pittsburgh was selected as the Rookie of the Week. Melvin was joined on the BIG EAST Honor Roll by Notre Dame’s Eric Atkins, Kadeem Batts from Providence, St. John’s D’Angelo Harrison and Anthony Collins of USF.
The Blue Demons play at Chicago State on Wednesday night before hosting Milwaukee on Sunday, Nov. 9 at Allstate Arena. The Blue Demons and Panthers are scheduled for a 4 p.m. tipoff in Rosemont on Sunday.
