CHICAGO - DePaul concludes its Pac-12 week by hosting Arizona State Friday evening at Allstate Arena. The Blue Demons opened the week on Sunday with a 93-81 win over Oregon State. DePaul and Arizona State meet at 6 p.m. at Allstate Arena in the sixth all-time meeting between the two programs.
Friday’s game will be televised on FOX Sports 1 with Eric Collins (play-by-play) and Stephen Bardo (analyst) handling the television duties. DePaul enters the game at 4-3 after the 93-81 win against Oregon State on Dec. 1. DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is in his fourth season at DePaul and his 26th as a head coach at the collegiate level. Arizona State is 7-2 overall and is led by Herb Sendek who is in his eighth season leading the Sun Devils. DePaul has knocked off Arizona State in each of the last two seasons including a 78-61 win in Tempe a year ago.
Following the Arizona State game, DePaul continues its five-game homestand against Florida Atlantic on Dec. 12. The Blue Demons and Owls can be seen on FOX Sports 1 starting at 8 p.m. The game can also be heard on WSCR 670 AM.
Noting the Blue Demons: The men’s basketball program is 1,399-904 (.608) all-time... the 80-71 win at Milwaukee on Nov. 19 was game No. 2,300 in program history since the first fully-recognized season in 1923-24... men’s basketball was played at DePaul prior to that season but records are incomplete... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 618 straight games... DePaul’s last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the Blue Demons are 319-152 (.676) all-time at Allstate Arena... DePaul is 8-1 (.889) all-time in games at McGrath-Phillips Arena... in each of Oliver Purnell’s three full seasons at DePaul, the Blue Demons have faced three Chicagoland opponents during the non-conference portion of the schedule with an 8-1 record in those games... the 2013-14 schedule features local opponents Chicago State and Northwestern... in the Purnell era, the Blue Demons are 19-3 (6-0 in 2012-13/4-0 in 2013-14) when scoring 80 or more points... The Opponent: Arizona State stands at 7-2 following a 1-2 run through the Wooden Legacy last weekend... the Sun Devils lost to Creighton (88-60), defeated College of Charleston (80-58) and lost to Miami (Fla.) (60-57)... Jahii Carson leads the team with 20.2 points and 46 assists... Jordan Bachynski adds a scoring average of 13.8 along with a team-high 10.1 rebounds per game... he has also recorded 37 rejections in nine games this season... head coach Herb Sendek is in his eighth season at Arizona State... DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is 2-0 all-time against Arizona State... the Sun Devils also faced Marquette of the BIG EAST with a 79-77 win over the Golden Eagles on Nov. 25.
The Series: Friday is the sixth meeting between the two programs... DePaul holds a 4-1 advantage in the series... the Blue Demons have won the last three meetings that include each of the last two seasons... DePaul knocked off Arizona State, 68-64, at the Old Spice Classic in Nov. 2011 and won in Tempe, 78-61, last season.
Against the Pac-12 Conference: DePaul is 27-28 all-time against the current membership of the Pac-12... Arizona State is the second of two Pac-12 opponents this week... DePaul defeated Oregon State, 93-81, on Dec. 1 at Allstate Arena... DePaul’s most common opponent is UCLA... the Bruins hold a 12-6 advantage in 18 all-time meetings... DePaul is also 3-4 against USC, 3-3 against California and 4-1 against Arizona State.
It Could Happen: A win would be the 1,400th in program history since the start of the first fully-recognized season in 1923-24... Brandon Young (1,492 pts.) needs three points to pass Sammy Mejia (1,494 pts., 2003-07) for 10th on the all-time scoring list... with one assist, Young (439 assists) takes sole possession of fifth in career assists... he enters Friday’s game tied with Rashon Burno (439 assists, 1998-02)... with three three-pointers, he passes Moses Morgan (107 3FG, 2010-13) for 15th place on the three-point field goal list... with three steals, Young (145 steals) moves past Jermaine Watts (147 steals, 1994-98) for 10th all-time.
Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul’s 93-81 win against Oregon State on Dec. 1:
- Billy Garrett Jr.'s 15-point, 10-assist double-double was the first point-assist double-double by a freshman since Sammy Mejia totaled 11 points and 11 assists against Southern Miss on Feb. 28, 2004.
- Sandi Marcius posted a career-high with 15 points and made all six of his shots from the field... he is the first player since Krys Faber on Feb. 12, 2011 to go perfect from the field (min. five attempts)... Faber went 5-for-5 at West Virginia.
- Cleveland Melvin finished with 20-plus points for the 28th time in his career.
- Brandon Young made his 100th career start and reached double-figures for the 80th time in his career.
- The game was only the second meeting between the programs and first since Dec. 21, 1945... DePaul now leads the series 2-0.
- The Blue Demons are 4-0 after leading at halftime in 2013... DePaul is now 19-3 when scoring 80-plus points under Oliver Purnell.
- Both Young and Melvin reached the 20-point plateau, becoming the first pair of players to do so since they pulled off the feat on Feb. 27, 2013 versus Louisville.
Rookies of the Week: A DePaul freshman has claimed the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week in two of the first three weeks of the season. Tommy Hamilton IV was named the league’s Rookie of the Week on Nov. 18 followed by Billy Garrett Jr. on Dec. 2.
Hamilton averaged 12.3 points and 6.7 rebounds over DePaul’s first three games of the season. He opened his collegiate career with an impressive 16-point, 11-rebound double-double against Grambling State on Nov. 9. The Chicago native achieved the feat in the first half alone with 11 points and 10 boards against the Tigers.
Hamilton followed up the season-opening double-double with eight points and four rebounds against Southern Miss on Nov. 13 and 13 points with five boards against Wright State on Nov. 16. The 6-10 center also showcased his range with a three-pointer in each of the last two games.
Garrett was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after putting together his first double-double and averaging 10.7 points and 4.3 assists in three games against Wichita State, Texas and Oregon State.
He totaled 15 points and 10 assists in DePaul’s 93-81 win over Oregon State on Sunday. In just his second collegiate start, the Chicago native played 36 minutes with 10 assists to only a pair of turnovers while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Earlier in the week at the CBE Hall of Fame Classic, he scored 11 points in his first collegiate start against Texas and finished with six points against Wichita State. In his two starts, Garrett averaged 13 points and six assists while shooting .421 from the field.
Two Sign NLI’s: DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell has signed two players to a National Letter of Intent to join the men’s basketball program starting next season. Jon Davis from Washington D.C. and Chicago native Rashaun Stimage are set to join the program staring with the 2014-15 season. The two players join Myke Henry who is sitting out this season under NCAA transfer guidelines.
Davis is an athletic 6-2 scoring guard and is finishing up his prep career at Clinton Christian School this year. Last season he played at National Christian Academy and averaged 17 points per game. Davis had an outstanding summer while playing for the DC Assault AAU program.
Stimage is in his sophomore season at Daytona State College and was a Chicago Public League standout at Farragut Academy. He played his freshman season at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas and averaged 15 points and eight rebounds. The 6-8 athletic forward was an ESPNChicago.com All-Area selection and ranked among the state’s top players after averaging 20 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks during his senior season at Farragut.
