CHICAGO – DePaul freshman Billy Garrett Jr. was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for the second time this season after averaging 15.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in wins over Florida Atlantic and Chicago State. He was joined by Cleveland Melvin who was named to the league’s Weekly Honor Roll.

Garrett went 10-for-18 (.556) from the field and 8-of-10 (.800) from the free throw line in the two victories. He opened the week with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists against Florida Atlantic while going 6-for-10 from the field.

The Chicago native scored eight of DePaul’s first 10 points in overtime to lead the Blue Demons to the seven-point win over Chicago State. He finished the game with 17 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists against the Cougars.

A DePaul freshman has claimed the league’s Rookie of the Week honor in three of the first five weeks of the season. Tommy Hamilton IV earn the recognition on Nov. 18 followed by Garrett on Dec. 2.

Melvin picked up Honor Roll recognition for the second time this season after averaging 18.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and two blocks per game against the Owls and Cougars. He led DePaul with 19 points against Florida Atlantic with six rebounds and two assists.

Melvin posted an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double against Chicago State and added four blocked shots, three steals and an assist. The double-double was his second of the season and 16th of his career. Melvin also continued to work his way up the all-time scoring chart and passed Dallas Comegys (1983-87) for seventh on DePaul's all-time scoring list. Melvin is now seventh all-time with 1,624 points.


 

 

Butler’s Kellen Dunham was the BIG EAST Player of the Week and Melvin was joined on the Honor Roll by Marquette’s Davante Gardner, Seton Hall’s Sterling Gibbs, Darrun Hilliard of Villanova and Xavier’s Justin Martin.
