DePaul Hosts UMBC in Rosemont on Saturday

CHICAGO - The Blue Demons look for their longest win streak since the 1993-94 season as they host the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Saturday’s game is the second of a three-game homestand as DePaul concludes the non-conference portion of the regular season prior to the Jan. 2 BIG EAST opener against Seton Hall. The Blue Demons and Retrievers are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start in Rosemont at Allstate Arena. DePaul enters the game with a six-game winning streak that includes road wins at Auburn, Chicago State and Arizona State.

Saturday’s game between DePaul and UMBC can be seen in Chicago on The U Too (WCIU-DT2) with Zach Zaidman (play-by-play) and Jeff Blanzy (analyst) calling all the action. The broadcast will also be available online on ESPN3. DePaul stands at 8-3 following a 69-64 win against Northern Illinois on Sunday. The Blue Demons hold a six-game winning streak heading into Saturday while UMBC enters the game with a 2-9 record. DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is in his third season at DePaul and his 25th as a head coach at the collegiate level. UMBC’s Aki Thomas is in his first season leading the Retrievers on interim head coach.

Following the UMBC game, DePaul returns to Allstate Arena on Dec. 29 to face Loyola-Chicago at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on The U Too in Chicago and on the radio at WSCR 670 The Score with Blanzy and Zaidman calling the action courtside.

Noting the Blue Demons: The men’s basketball program is 1,392-883 (.612) all-time... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 590 straight games... DePaul’s last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the Blue Demons are 315-142 (.689) all-time at Allstate Arena... DePaul is 7-1 (.875) all-time in games at McGrath-Phillips Arena... the Blue Demons currently hold a nine-game winning streak against Chicagoland programs that includes victories over Chicago State, UIC, Loyola and Northern Illinois... in each of Oliver Purnell’s two-plus seasons at DePaul, the Blue Demons have faced three Chicagoland opponents during the non-conference portion of the schedule with wins in each meeting... in the Purnell era, the Blue Demons are 14-3 when scoring 80 or more points... DePaul has used seven different starting lineups this season... Cleveland Melvin and Brandon Young have started every game this season... DePaul is scheduled to have at least 27 games televised during the 2012-13 season.

The Opponent - UMBC Retrievers: UMBC stands at 2-9 entering Saturday’s game... the Retrievers have not played since an 80-61 loss against Coppin State on Dec. 12... Ryan Cook leads the team with a 17.8 scoring average... he is followed by Chase Plummer with 11.5 points per game and Brett Roseboro with 10.3 points per contest... DePaul is the second BIG EAST opponent for the Retrievers following a 79-46 loss at Marquette on Nov. 26... acting head coach Aki Thomas is in his first season leading the UMBC program... DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is 1-0 all-time against the Retrievers.

The Series: Saturday is the first meeting between the two programs.

Against the America East Conference: DePaul is 11-0 all-time against the current lineup of America East Conference programs... the Blue Demons are 7-0 against Maine and 3-0 against Hartford... DePaul also has a victory against Albany... Albany was the last America East opponent with a 75-64 DePaul win in the first round of the 2009 NIT.

It Could Happen: A win would give DePaul its first seven-game winning streak since a nine-game run from Dec. 7, 1993-Jan. 8, 1994... Cleveland Melvin is playing in his 70th career game... with 10 points, Melvin records his 60th career game in double-figures and 26th in-a-row... Melvin needs four points to pass Jim Murphy (1,121 pts, 1962-65) for 34th place on DePaul’s all-time scoring list... with three blocked shots he moves into a tie for 10th with Wilson Chandler (86 blocks, 2005-07)... Brandon Young needs one three-pointer to move into a tie for 18th all-time with Quemont Greer (83 3pt. FG, 2001-05) and Terry Davis (1989-93).

Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul’s 69-64 win against Northern Illinois on Dec. 16:
- The Blue Demons are now on a six-game winning streak for the first time since Feb. 25-March 12, 2004.
- The game was the 32nd meeting between the two schools... DePaul holds the series lead, 25-6, with three straight wins in the series... DePaul improved to 78-34 all-time against the current MAC lineup.
- DePaul extended its streak of consecutive games with a three-pointer to 590.
- The Blue Demons held their fourth straight opponent under 45 percent shooting, limiting the Huskies to a .400 field goal percentage.
- Brandon Young finished in double figures for the 11th consecutive game... he went 5-of-10 from field-goal range, 4-of-4 at the line, and finished with four boards and five assists to earn the earning the Jay Goedert Memorial Award for most outstanding player of the game.
- Cleveland Melvin reached double figures--with 12 points--for the 25th consecutive game.
- Jamee Crockett finished with a season-high 14 points, reaching double figures for the second time this season.
- Derrell Robertson made his second career start and first of the season.

Fun With Numbers: DePaul enters the UMBC game with a streak of 10 straight made free throws... Cleveland Melvin’s streak of 25 straight games in double-figures is tied for fourth nationally... including Brandon Young’s 11-game streak in double-figures, only DePaul, Michigan and Cal State Fullerton feature multiple players owning active career streak of 10 or more... No. 12 Cleveland Melvin scored 12 points on 12/12/12... a year ago, No. 11 Jeremiah Kelly scored 11 points on 11/11/11 for DePaul.

Who’s Next: The Blue Demons host Loyola-Chicago on Saturday, Dec. 29... Loyola holds a 7-3 record heading into its game at Saint Peter’s on Saturday... the game is the 56th meeting between the two programs with DePaul holding a 38-17 advantage in the series... the Blue Demons have won 11 straight games and 21 of the last 24 in the series.
