Blue Demons Hit the Road for Sunday Afternoon Game at Illinois State

CHICAGO - DePaul heads into the home stretch of the non-conference schedule with a pair of upcoming road games. The Blue Demons travel to Illinois State for a Sunday afternoon contest before playing at Northwestern on Friday night. DePaul and Illinois State meet for the 25th time overall, but just the first time since Dec. 1996 at 3:35 p.m. Sunday at Redbird Arena.

Sunday’s game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet Chicago with Kurt Pegler (play-by-play) and Bob Morris (analyst) handling the television duties. DePaul enters the game at 7-4 after a 78-58 win over Houston Baptist on Wednesday. DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is in his fourth season at DePaul and his 26th as a head coach at the collegiate level. Illinois State is 6-5 overall and is led by Dan Muller who is in his second season leading the Redbirds.

Following the Illinois State game, DePaul wraps up the non-conference portion of the schedule at Northwestern on Friday. The Blue Demons take the short trip to Chicago’s north suburb of Evanston for an 8 p.m. game at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The game can be seen on the Big Ten Network and heard on WSCR 670 AM.

Noting the Blue Demons: The men’s basketball program is 1,402-905 (.608) all-time... the 80-71 win at Milwaukee on Nov. 19 was game No. 2,300 in program history since the first fully-recognized season in 1923-24... men’s basketball was played at DePaul prior to that season but records are incomplete... the 81-70 win over Florida Atlantic on Dec. 12 was win No. 1,400 since start of 1923-24 season... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 622 straight games... DePaul’s last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the Blue Demons are 322-153 (.678) all-time at Allstate Arena... DePaul is 8-1 (.889) all-time in games at McGrath-Phillips Arena... in each of Oliver Purnell’s three full seasons at DePaul, the Blue Demons have faced three Chicagoland opponents during the non-conference portion of the schedule with an 8-1 record in those games... the 2013-14 schedule features local opponents Chicago State and Northwestern... in the Purnell era, the Blue Demons are 20-3 - including 12 straight wins (6-0 in 2012-13/5-0 in 2013-14) - when scoring 80 or more points... DePaul 77-70 overtime win over Chicago State on Dec. 15 snapped an eight-game losing streak in overtime games... it was the first extra-frame win since a 68-66 win on Nov. 28, 2009 against Detroit and the first overtime victory for Oliver Purnell at DePaul... The Opponent: Illinois State stands at 6-5 following a 64-58 win over Tennessee State on Thursday night... the Redbirds have won five of their last six after starting the season with a 1-4 record... Daishon Knight leads the team with 14.5 points per game and 19 three-pointers... Zach Lofton adds 11.3 points per game... head coach Dan Muller is in his second season at Illinois State... The Series: Sunday is the 25th all-time meeting between the two programs... the game is the first since Dec. 1996... DePaul has won 21 of the 24 meetings... Sunday is the 11th meeting at Illinois State and first Dec. 1992.

The Last Meeting: Illinois State posted a 75-50 win over DePaul on Dec. 4, 1996... the game was played in St. Louis, Mo... the win for the Redbirds snapped an 11-game winning streak in the series for the Blue Demons.

Against the Missouri Valley Conference: DePaul is 120-44 all-time against the current membership of the Missouri Valley... the Blue Demons have faced league newcomer Loyola 56 times and hold a 38-18 record against the Ramblers... DePaul is also 25-13 against Bradley and 21-3 against Illinois State... Illinois State is the second Valley opponent of the season... the Blue Demons dropped a 90-72 decision to Wichita State on Nov. 25 at the CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City.


It Could Happen: A win extends DePaul’s streak to seven straight road non-conference wins... the Blue Demons enter the game with one of the nation’s longest road non-conference win streaks... DePaul’s last road non-conference loss was a 73-51 decision at Indiana State on Dec. 8, 2010... Cleveland Melvin (113 blocks) needs one blocked shot to break a tie for sixth all-time with David Booth (113 blocks, 1988-92)... with 10 rebounds, Melvin (659 rebs.) passes Quemont Greer (668 rebs., 2001-05) for 22nd all-time... Brandon Young (1,529 pts.) needs six points to pass Terry Davis (1,534 pts., 1989-93) for ninth on the all-time scoring list... Young enters the Illinois State game tied with Moses Morgan (107 3pt. FG, 2010-13) for 15th place in career three-pointers... Young could finish Sunday’s game in 13th place with Dar Tucker (108 3pt. FG, 2007-09) in 14th and Brad Niemann (109 3pt. FG, 1987-91) in 13th place... Young (147 steals) needs three steals to pass Peter Patton (149 steals, 1992-96) for ninth in school history.

Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul’s 78-58 win against Houston Baptist on Dec. 18:
- DePaul improves to 1-0 all-time against Houston Baptist in the schools’ first meeting... the Blue Demons are now 8-0 against the current Southland Conference lineup.

- Sandi Marcius blocked a career-high three shots.
